Reconciliation

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Picture
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we express sorrow for our sins and promise to do our best to not repeat sin again. We acknowledge our sins before God, we receive pardon (absolution), and we perform an act of penance or reconciliation as directed by the priest. The grace we receive from the reception of this Sacrament helps us grow stronger in our faith and our ability to live a Christ-centered life.

Any baptized Catholic may receive this Sacrament. There is no limit to the number of times we can be forgiven for our sins! Catholics are encouraged to receive this Sacrament at least once a year between the start of Lent and Pentecost. Catholics who have committed serious sin are not to receive the Eucharist until their serious sin has been forgiven in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) explains that the precepts of the Church are meant to guarantee us "the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort in the growth in love of God and neighbor" (CCC 2041).

Continuing under the "first precept, 'You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation...'" (CCC 2042), the "second precept ('You shall confess your [serious] sins at least once a year') ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness."

In addition, the "third precept ('You shall receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at least once during the Easter season') guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's body and blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian Liturgy" (CCC 2042).

FORMED
FORGIVEN: THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF CONFESSION

The season of Advent is a perfect time for spiritual renewal through encountering God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In his letter to the Romans, St. Paul says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin—and the resulting guilt—is a universal experience. Maybe we try to justify our sins and ignore the guilt. Maybe the guilt becomes all-consuming, and we can’t see a way out. But that guilt isn’t meant to be ignored or to consume us. Guilt is a wake-up call, and God wants to use it to draw us mercifully back to himself.
Forgiven - Session 1: Where are You? | Sesión 1: ¿Dónde estás?
Have you ever felt lost and alone, isolated in guilt? Like the Prodigal Son among the pigs, we know that we have sinned. But God won't leave us there—he searches for us and runs to welcome us home in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Forgiven - Session 2: An Encounter with Mercy | Sesión 2: Un encuentro de Misericordia
We are not defined by our mistakes. In Confession, Jesus invites us to encounter his mercy and be healed by his love. When he tells us "Go and sin no more," he also gives us the grace to do so.

Whether you go to Confession regularly or a decade ago, this session guides you step-by-step through the deeper meaning of every aspect of the Rite—what it is, why we do it, and how it impacts your life.
