MEssage from our Ministers

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
. . . since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
    - Ezekiel 18:28

He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way. - Psalm 25:9

. . . he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. - Philippians 2:8

“Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.” He said in reply, “I will not,” but afterwards changed his mind and went.- Matthew 21:28-29

The first son replied to his father, “I will not” when asked to go into the vineyard. Changing one’s mind, and more importantly, one’s heart, can be an act of humility. When we realize that we need to make a change, need to rethink and rework our path, we do so in humility and truth.

Webster defines humility as “not proud or haughty, not arrogant or assertive; reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission.”

As Jesus emptied and humbled himself, let us ask for the grace of humility, for the grace to let go of our plans, ideas, and ways. Let us turn away from our sins and move toward Christ and enter into the self-emptying that brings about true fullness.

Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
ABC with FATHER MARK

Dear Parishioners,

In February, just before the quarantine began, I gave the first and only part of a series of talks called “ABC: Art, Books, and Culture”. I explained the delightful short story by Annie Dillard entitled: “An Expedition to the Pole.”

This week I would like to continue our series by summarizing my favorite book: “A Story of a Soul” which is the autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux. Please join me this Wednesday, September 30 at from
6:30-7:30 PM in front of our community center. It will be for me a joyful way to celebrate the vigil of the Feast of St. Therese, October 1, which is also my birthday!

To attend the event, please make a reservation on our website or by calling our parish office, because we are limited to 100 attendees. The event will be livestreamed for those who want to watch from home.

To prepare for the event, you can read the book yourself, which is available in PDF form on the internet (search “Story of a Soul pdf”), and you may also read an article I wrote which is available at the following link:
www.presentationchurch.net/parish-news.html (click on Fr. Mark’s Reflections)

From beginning to end, the “Story of a Soul” is about God’s mercy. At the very beginning, she explains that she is writing because she was ordered to do so by the Mother Superior of her convent, but also because she must sing of God’s mercy: “Our Lord has deigned to make me understand that by simple obedience I shall please Him best. I begin therefore to sing what must be my eternal song: "the Mercies of the Lord." Then her entire book is about her “little way” of total confidence in God’s tender mercy. She truly believed that if it were not for God’s mercy, she would have become the greatest of sinners. She felt that she had no merits of her own, and so she offered herself as a “victim” for God’s Merciful Love. She said that God was like a loving father who would certainly forgive her if she threw herself into his arms and said, “Punish me with kisses”! Even on her deathbed, when she became aware of another sin, she was filled with joy because it meant that she could offer that sin also to God’s mercy!

The readings for today’s Sunday Mass are about mercy. Our Psalm response is “Remember your mercies, O Lord.” (Psalm 25:6-7) Then in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus warns us that sinners sometimes enter heaven easily: “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.” (Matthew 21;31) Jesus is telling us that St. Theresa’s way works! Even if we are great sinners, we can trust completely in his mercy, as St. Therese did. Join us Wednesday evening for a journey of exploration into God’s merciful love!

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

26th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“Do nothing out of selfishness; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves…”  Philippians 2:3

Pride and ego are hard things to control.  We see how others act or dress and think we are superior to them.  We idolize our own self-image.  But, if we truly believe everything is a gift from God, we recognize all the people that God has put in our lives as gifts!  We are grateful for how they enrich our lives.  Pray every day for the people in your life: your family, your friends and those who make you angry.

Sharing the Gospel
Maybe you have heard that actions speak louder than words. It means that the things you do are more important than the things you say. Show kindness to others. Trust God. He wants what is best for you, so find out how to work for God. Then do what he asks.

Prayer
God, I want to show you that I love you.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself washing the dishes.

Mission for the Week
Show kindness to a friend. Help someone pick up a mess they made, just because you love Jesus.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael

Feast Day: September 29th

These archangels, messengers sent by God, are the only ones named in the Bible. In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called “the great prince”; in the Letter of Jude, he argues with the devil over Moses’ body; and in the Book of Revelation, he leads the battle against Satan. He is patron of the sick, radiologists and mariners. Gabriel explains Daniel’s visions to him in the Book of Daniel, and in the Gospel of Luke announces to Zechariah and Mary the births of their respective sons. He is the patron of messengers and telecommunications and postal workers. Raphael guides Tobiah in the Book of Tobit; he is patron of the blind, physicians and travelers. The church created their joint feast after the Second Vatican Council.

San Miguel, San Gabriel y San Rafael

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
