MEssage from our Ministers

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
. . . for according to his own words, God will take care of him. - Wisdom 2:20

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life. - Psalm 54:6

Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? - James 4:1

The Son of Man is to be handed over . . . and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise. - Mark 9:31

Violence, wars, destruction, death – How much a part of our lives these realities are! It’s not easy to look into ourselves and see that these conflicts come from within us. It’s not so much that evil is out there, but in here, in our hearts and minds.

Sometimes we focus on the raw reality of such suffering and throw our hands up in despair. While these realities are very much a part of who we are, we need to turn to Jesus for the other side of the picture. Jesus taught his disciples the difficult things, that he was going to suffer and die. That’s not the end, though. He conquered death and rose from the dead.

When the harsh realities of life crash upon and overwhelm us, let us remember to go to Jesus, the One who went through and was triumphant over death. Let us remember that God does indeed care for and sustain us.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Gospel Meditation

Thank god for priests who
respond to God’s call!

During this coming week, we will have the opportunity to reflect on the beautiful gift of the priesthood.

This Monday is the Feast Day of the Vietnamese Martyrs, many of whom were priests, who were killed for their efforts to spread the faith in Vietnam.

This Tuesday, we can congratulate Fr. Matthew because it will be the Feast Day of his patron saint, St. Matthew the Apostle. I am very grateful that my friend
Fr. Matthew and I were both sent here at the same time two years ago to serve at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. Along with Fr. Joe Maghinay, we try to follow the example of the apostles and to serve worthily.

This Thursday is September 23, which is the Feast Day another saint whose priestly example we must try to imitate: St. Pio of Pietrelcina. When he was a boy, he met a bearded Franciscan and decided that he too wanted to be a priest with a beard. He became the most famous one in the world. He became known as “Padre Pio”, the priest in Southern Italy who had miraculous powers to heal, to know the future, to read minds, to bilocate, to levitate, and to cast out demons. He saw visions and for fifty years he bore the stigmata: the mysterious wounds of Christ on his body which would never heal. He was attacked by demons and he was also persecuted by jealous priests and by skeptical bishops in the Roman Curia. For several years he was forbidden to do public ministry. His life is a
testimony to the fact that there are good priests and bad priests. He was put to the test by wicked men, as is described in our first reading today: “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings,
reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him… With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience.” (Wisdom 2:12, 17-19)

This Friday is my 33rd anniversary as a priest! I was ordained a priest on
September 24, 1988. I can say that I am very happy that I found my vocation. I have never doubted that God was calling me to be a priest. From dawn to dusk I try to serve and save God’s people. I begin the day with a morning offering prayer and then I try to be an instrument in the hands of Our Lord and Our Lady. I make time for my daily Holy Hour with Jesus in the Eucharist. Every day is different with such a variety of activities. I enjoy helping people in their sad times and their glad times. I forgive their sins and give them Jesus in the Eucharist. I also enjoy my weekly day off with my priest friends or with my father who lives in Stockton. I thank God for all this and that for the fact that we live in a country where priests are not persecuted!

From our Stewardship Council

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35

Jesus teaches us that we are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don’t like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

Sharing the Gospel
Even though they were friends, sometimes the disciples fought with each other. In today's Gospel reading, they were fighting over who was the most important. All twelve of them wanted to be number one - the best disciple. Then Jesus told them a secret. The best disciple is the one who helps other people.

Prayer
Dear God, when I am tempted to fight with my friends, show me ways to help them instead.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

St. Padre Pio

1887-1968
Feast Day: September 23

Friar Pio became known to many as Padre Pio. He bore the stigmata, or wounds of Christ, invisibly from the time of his ordination in 1910 and visibly from 1918. The Vatican investigated the authenticity of his stigmata, and his ministry of prayer and healing, beginning in 1921. As his renown grew, so did persecution. In 1922, various restrictions were placed on his ministry, including being forbidden from giving blessings to the faithful. In 1931, he was forbidden from publicly celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, and receiving visitors. This ban was lifted by the Pope Pius XI in 1933, and Padre Pio was allowed to gradually resume public ministry.

Padre Pio is known for being a gifted confessor, his efficacious intercessory prayer, and other mystical gifts associated with his religious life. Under the direction of Padre Pio, in 1947, construction began to build a hospital to treat patients at San Giovanni Rotondo, using science along with faith and prayer. Shortly before his death in 1968, the stigmata disappeared. He was canonized in 2002 by St. John Paul II. Pope Francis has called Padre Pio an “apostle of the confessional.”

“For Padre Pio, faith was life: he willed everything and did everything in the light of faith. He was assiduously devoted to prayer. He passed the day and a large part of the night in conversation with God. He would say: ‘In books we seek God, in prayer we find him. Prayer is the key which opens God’s heart.’” —Vatican News Service

San Pío de Pietrelcina
1887-1968

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
