MEssage from our Ministers

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. . . . Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.  - Sirach 27:30 – 28:2

He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion. - Psalm 103:3-4

For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. - Romans 14:7-8

Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. . . . Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you? - Matthew 18:27, 33

Do we hug tight the wrath and anger that choke our soul? Or do we pardon, let go, and forgive so we can be freed from the chokehold that imprisons us?

Perhaps this week we can sit with Jesus and ask him to show us how he was able to forgive even those who crucified him. Perhaps we can ask him for the grace and strength to forgive someone or even ourselves.

Let us pray for the grace and desire to open our hearts and release the grip of unforgiveness so the light of love will rise in our hearts and compassion will live and act in our very being.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

24th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” – Romans 14:8

This is the essence of stewardship – everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God.  We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts that God has given us, especially our very own lives.  Pray to God, daily, and ask Him how He is calling you to live the life that He intended for you.

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus says to forgive each other seventy times seven or 490 times. That's forgiving once each day for more than a year. Put 490 jelly beans in a gallon "Forgiveness Jug." Each time you forgive someone, eat a jelly bean. When you realize that God has forgiven you, it is easier to forgive others from your heart. God fills you with his love, which is even better than jelly beans. Then you can forgive without holding a grudge.

Prayer
God, teach me to forgive other people the way you forgive me.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of you and your friend forgiving each other and playing together.

Mission for the Week
Name one person you are angry with. Pray to God. Ask God to help you let go of your anger and really forgive.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Cyprian of Carthage

c. 200-258
Feast Day: September 16th

One of the first great theologians in the church, this Latin father is remembered today for his writings, which are quoted in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. A late convert, Thascius Cecilianus Cyprianus was a lawyer, rhetorician and teacher before being chosen by the people and clergy of Carthage, in North Africa, as their bishop. He was drawn into papal controversies and schisms, but he also was known for pastoral zeal and aiding plague victims. Having survived one Roman persecution, he later was beheaded for refusing to participate in state religious ceremonies. He wrote biblical commentary and treatises on church unity and the sacraments. Cyprian is the patron saint of North Africa and Algeria.

San Cipriano de Cartago
c. 200-258

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen
