MEssage from our Ministers

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Lord God is my help. . . . - Isaiah 50:7

. . . he has inclined his ear to me the day I called - Psalm 116:2

What good is it . . . if someone says he has faith but does not have works? - James 2:14

But who do you say that I am? - Mark 8:29

God is the center of our lives. If we acted on this, we would be amazed at what would happen. Sometimes we get off center, out of order, off track. God is always our help; we have only to approach God and ask for help. God does indeed listen to us. Do we return the favor?

Faith, one of the three theological virtues, can move mountains (1 Corinthians 13:2), but sometimes we don’t make the effort. Our words say one thing, but our actions do not follow. Faith is a precious gift, a powerful force, but if we do not act, our faith is empty and powerless.

Jesus’ question to his disciples begs an answer. Let us spend time this week answering that question (Who do you say that I am?). Let us put our faith into action, for faith without works is dead (James 2:17).
Picture
Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

El Señor Dios es mi ayuda. . . . - Isaías 50: 7

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Gospel Meditation

We need to get our bearings straight and properly lay life’s cornerstone. Otherwise, the rest of our journey will be skewed, and our judgment clouded. We can recall Jesus’
famous rebuke of Peter, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Even he, as one of Jesus’ closest friends, struggles with understanding things and grasping the big picture. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) a renowned and learned French Jesuit priest often has these words attributed to him: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
Whether they were actually from his lips, they certainly mimic his thought. These wise words orient us and capture the essence of who we really are.

Many people consider spirituality an option. It is no wonder that they come to this conclusion when they predominantly define themselves using human terms and concepts. Immersed in this worldview, they struggle to find any semblance of God because God does not work according to human expectations! This is especially true when suffering and death enter life’s picture. If we are only human beings
having a spiritual experience, then we wrongly expect our spirituality to serve us as we desire. The human expectation is that my spiritual life is something that is
useful in avoiding pain, hardship, and death, not something that gives me the
courage to live through it!

So, when we protest and get upset with God because our journey is becoming
difficult, painful, treacherous, disappointing, and even pointing us toward death, Jesus rebukes us as he did Peter and gently reminds us how to see. It is God who inspires and opens hearts to see truth and beauty. In God, the true meaning of things is understood, and we receive a depth of insight and understanding that is not found following purely human paths. It is not our task to understand God, as God is beyond human understanding. Ours is the joyful privilege of simply resting in God’s presence simply because God is God and we are who we are. As
spiritual beings having an exciting and adventurous human experience, it is in our DNA to do so. Through prayer, we can let go and let be. This is how we lose our lives but then save them.

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” - Mark 8:34

Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for my own life but for the lives of others as well. We realize that our gifts are not intended for ourselves; rather they are meant to be shared with others. “Taking up my cross” means doing things when someone else needs me and not when it’s convenient for me.
Picture
Picture

Children's PRayer

From our Minister of religious Education

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus was the king, the Messiah that God's people had been waiting for. In today's Gospel reading, the disciples were confused. If Jesus were the king, why was he saying he would die soon? Jesus' friends did not understand yet that by dying on the cross, Jesus would save them from their sins.

Prayer
Dear God, thank you for coming to save me from my sins.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus carrying his cross.

Mission for the Week

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Saint Catherine of Genoa

1447-1510
Feast Day: September 15

Caterina Fieschi wanted to be a nun like her older sister, but instead was married at 16 to Giuliano Adorno. Their arranged union was not happy for Caterina; her husband had a child with his mistress and wasted much of their fortune. But in 1473 Caterina had a vision of Christ carrying his cross which changed her life. Thereafter, she devoted her life to prayer and caring for the poor in the slums of Genoa, Italy. Giuliano also changed, becoming a Franciscan tertiary. They both worked at the largest charity hospital in Europe, with Caterina advancing from volunteer to director. She also wrote about mysticism and was canonized in 1737.

Santa Catalina de Génova
1447-1510

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
