MEssage from our Ministers

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him? - Deuteronomy 4:7

The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. - Responsorial Psalm Refrain

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. - James 1:22

This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. . . . - Mark 7:6

We do the things we do not want to do and do not do the things we want to do (cf Romans 7:19). We desire to do what is good, right, and just, but do not always carry it out. We try to refrain from doing evil, but we are caught up in it. “As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers; subject to ignorance, suffering, and the domination of death; and inclined to sin” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 418).

“The grace of Christ is the gratuitous gift that God makes to us of his own life, infused by the Holy Spirit into our soul to heal it of sin and to sanctify it” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1999).

God well knows our predicament. God well knows our hearts. Let us reflect on God’s love and desire for us. Let us ask for the grace to put God’s word into action this week so that our hearts will draw closer to God.

Dios conoce bien nuestro predicamento. Dios conoce bien nuestros corazones.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Gospel Meditation

“Their hearts are far from me.”

My dear parish family,

In today’s Gospel, Jesus expresses his sadness about the fact the hearts of some people are distant and closed. He complains that “Their hearts are far from me.” (Mark 7:1-23) God wants our hearts to be open and close to him so that he can fill them with the warmth of his love.

I want to thank all of you who have opened your hearts and consoled me after the death of my mother last week. I learned that the hearts of my parishioners are not far from me. I felt the love of so many hearts that were open and poured out torrents of love in phone calls, texts, emails, sympathy cards, and food for me and my family. After Masses, everyone expressed their heartfelt condolences.

Jesus has filled the hearts of my parishioners with the warm love of his Sacred Heart, which then overflows and is poured out upon the needy and the sorrowful.

For the past month, we have been reflecting on the Eucharist, which is Jesus’ way of filling our hearts with his love. We have been listening to chapter six of the Gospel of John about the Bread from Heaven which we must eat if we wish to have life within us. Today, however, we return to the Gospel of Mark which is read on most Sundays this year. The Gospel of Mark also presents Jesus as the one who wants to fill us with his love. Chapter six of Marks’ Gospel describes how Jesus multiplies loaves of bread to feed a huge crowd. Chapters 6-8 of John’s Gospel are called “the bread section” of Mark’s Gospel because there are many references to bread, loaves, food, and eating. Jesus wants to fill us. He comes to dwell in our hearts as in a temple. He is traveling toward Jerusalem where he will cleanse the temple and replace the temple sacrifices by offering himself as the new Passover meal. But not everyone will accept the nourishment that Jesus wants to provide. Their hearts are far from him. The Pharisees and the temple scribes are so fixated on the minute details of their rituals that they forget about the love of God and neighbor (chapter 7). They purify cups and jugs but fail to purify their hearts. They worry about what goes into their stomachs, but they don’t think about the filth that flows out of their hearts. Jesus complains that they neglect the charity that begins at home, making excuses. He says that they fail to honor their father and mother by saying that they are doing more important work in the temple. He accuses them of neglecting their needy parents by claiming a religious exemption. The scribes believed that since they worked in the temple, their possessions could be considered as belonging to the temple. They could claim that all their wealth belonged to God, and so they could either enjoy it themselves, or offer some of it at the altar, but they claimed that they could not give any of it to anyone outside the temple, even needy parents. Jesus accuses them with strong words: “You say, ‘If a person says to father or mother, “Any support you might have had from me is qorban”’ (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother.”

Sometimes a priest or religious sister does have to leave his father and mother and go to a faraway place to work for souls. Last year a young lady from Riverbank went to Cleveland to become a Mercedarian Sister. Now she is now Sister Raquel of the Holy Spirit and is moving to another convent in New Orleans. Only once a year can she visit her mother and her siblings in Riverbank. She has been called by God and must have faith that God in his providence will care for her dear mother.

I am so blessed that I was moved back to my home parish in time to help care for my elderly parents. Providentially my two sisters were also able to be here during the time of my mother’s terminal illness and death. God is so good! He has allowed me to offer sacrifice at the altar in the temple and also to care for the temple which is the body of my mother. Now that she has died, I can dedicate more time to serving my mother, the church. The maternal heart of my mother has stopped beating, and her love seems far away, but I have discovered that my parish is like a loving mother to me. I also rely on the help of the Immaculate Heart of my heavenly Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Please continue to pray for my mother, that she may enter the heavenly Jerusalem! Pray to St. Joseph for Josephine, who died in the Year of St. Joseph!

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Be doers of the word and not hearers only. - James 1:22

It’s easy to understand the definition of stewardship – living a grateful and generous life. The hard part is doing it! How do your actions reflect God’s word? Do you share your time in prayer with God? Do you use your talent to help those in need? Are you generous with your financial resources? If not, what are you waiting for?

Picture

Sharing the Gospel
Wash your hands before you eat! Did you know that rule came from God, so that we would stay healthy? In today's Gospel, the Pharisees liked to wash their hands and follow God's rules, but only because they liked to show off. Don't be like those Pharisees. When you follow God's rules, do the right thing out of love for God.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to keep my heart clean, full of love for you and other people. Amen.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself cleaning up the dishes after a meal.

Mission for the Week
The next time you wash your hands, thank God that he made rules to keep us all safe, healthy and happy.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Saint Jeanne Jugan

1792-1879
Feast Day: August 30

Born in Brittany, in France, Jeanne was four when her fisherman father died. Her mother supported six children as a farm laborer. Jeanne became a kitchen maid at 16, and her mistress took her on visits to the sick and poor. She joined a third order at 25, working in a hospital for six years, then returned to domestic service. Soon, however, she began devoting herself entirely to care of the poor, especially widows, living in the community with two other women. Though she established the Little Sisters of the Poor in 1842, she was not recognized as the order’s founder until 1893. Canonized in 2009, she is considered a patron of the elderly.

Santa Juana Jugan
1792-1879

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
