MEssage from our Ministers

17th Sunday in ORdinary Time
But his servant objected, “How can I set this before a hundred people?”
- 2 Kings 4:43

The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season. . . .
- Psalm 145:15

. . . as you were also called to the one hope of your call. . . .
- Ephesians 4:4

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” - John 6:8-9

Sometimes we are confronted with things that seem impossible. We give up because we cannot see beyond the natural. If we trust God with eyes of faith and hearts of hope, amazing things can happen.

What is the food or nourishment we are seeking? Can we let go of what our natural eyes see and open our eyes of faith? Can we entrust the seemingly impossible to God, believing that “the hand of the Lord feeds us; [that God] answers all our needs” (Responsorial Psalm Refrain)?

Decimoséptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Dear parishioners,

There has been a revival of activity in our parish and all of the parishes of our local Church, the Catholic Diocese of Stockton. When we hear the word “revival” we usually think of how protestant pastors used to gather people in large tents for boisterous services called “revival meetings”. For us, however, we are happy to see an end to gathering in tents and to finally be able to go inside and to have Mass inside the church! We who are Catholics, are experiencing a true revival because we know that watching Mass virtually is not the same as attending Mass and enjoying the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. It is therefore very appropriate that our bishop Myron Cotta has asked all parishes to participate in what he calls a “Eucharistic Revival”. He wants every priest and every parish to spend time re-discovering the Eucharist and re-learning the meaning of the Mass.

It happens that from now until August 15, we will be hearing gospel readings at Sunday Masses from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, which is the “Bread of Life sermon” that Jesus gave at Capernaum. Here at Presentation Parish, the priests will explain that the Eucharist is truly the Bread from Heaven which we must eat to have life in us. There is no revival without the Eucharist.

Also, for homework, all of us can spend time at home during the week learning about the Eucharist by viewing the many video catechesis which are available online. Our bishop invites everyone to go to a special page on the diocesan website where you can find links to many of these wonderful videos. The webpage is called “Re-Learning the Mass” and it can be found at https://stocktondiocese.org/relearning-the-mass.

I would especially recommend the videos by a recently ordained priest from our Diocese, Fr. Larry Machado. He grew up in Turlock and studied liturgy in Rome. Also, I hope you watch the videos created by Brandt Pitre, who is a delightful young man from Louisiana who is an expert in the Old Testament Jewish roots of our faith.

The diocese also gives a few documents which you can read. I would especially recommend:
  1. “Dies Domini” by Pope Saint John Paul II, which is a wonderful explanation of Sunday which is “The Day of the Lord”.
  2. “Ecclesia de Eucharistia” by Saint John Paul II
  3. “Sacramentum Caritatis” by Pope Benedict XVI
  4. A catechesis from Pope Francis “Catechesis on the Mass”

Also recommended are some books to read. I would especially recommend three of them:
  1. “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by Brant Pitre
  2. “A Biblical Walk Through the Mass,” by Edward Sri
  3. “The Lamb's Supper,” by Scott Hahn

I hope that these resources, as well as the rousing sermons that you will hear on Sundays, will help create a true “Eucharistic Revival” at our parish!

MENSAJE DE FR. MARK:

Queridos feligreses,

1.  “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by Brant Pitre
2. “A Biblical Walk Through the Mass,” by Edward Sri
3. “The Lamb's Supper,” by Scott Hahn

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” - John 6:9

The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes carries two important messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. Nothing is impossible with God. All of our gifts, big or small, were given to us for a reason. No gift is too small or insignificant!

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus seemed to be surrounded by crowds a lot, didn't he? That's because no matter where he went, he helped people, he healed them, and he taught them about God. In today's Gospel reading, one crowd was following Jesus all day, and now they were getting hungry for dinner. Instead of sending them back home, Jesus showed everybody's God's amazing power. Jesus took a boy's lunch and made more than enough food for everybody to eat.

Prayer
Dear God, help me always to remember that you have the power to give us more than we need. Amen.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of two fish and five loaves of bread.

Mission for the Week
The boy in today's Gospel shared his lunch. You can share food, too. Bring boxed and canned food to a food pantry in your neighborhood, and ask God to bless the people who eat it.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

Blessed Stanley Rother

March 27, 1935 - July 28, 1981
Feast Day: July 28

An Oklahoma farm boy, Father Stanley Francis Rother was born in Okarche, Oklahoma. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1963, he served in the diocese’s Guatemala mission for fourteen years, ministering to the native Tzutuhil tribe. Fr. Stan (or Padre Francisco, as he was affectionately known), learned the Tzutuhil language and became one with his poverty-stricken flock, ministering to his parishioners in their homes, eating with them, visiting the sick, aiding with medical problems and helping on their farms.

While he served in Guatemala, a civil war raged between the militarist government forces and the guerillas and hundreds of thousands of Catholics were killed due to the Church’s insistence on helping people. Eventually, Fr. Stan was targeted. For his safety, he returned to Oklahoma, but was not able to hold himself back from his people. After a short period that was akin to his own “Garden of Gethsemane” moment, he returned to his people, famously saying that “the shepherd cannot run.” Within days of his return to Santiago Atitlan, three men entered the rectory and killed him. A true imitation of the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his flock, Fr. Stan was declared a martyr and beatified in 2017.

Beato Stanley Rother
1935-1981

Welcome Back Students, Family, Faculty, and Staff

We look forward to a phenomenal school year!

“Alone we can do so little, together we can so much.” - Helen Keller. Our new normal (for now): teaching lessons via ZOOM. Our teachers are working around the clock and going above & beyond to be there for their students.

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
