MEssage from our Ministers

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Lord appeared to Abraham by the terebinth of Mamre. . . . Looking up, Abraham saw three men standing nearby. - Genesis 18:1, 2

[The one] who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. - Response to the Psalm (15)

It is he whom we proclaim. . . . - Colossians 1:28

There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. - Luke 10:42

“Abraham addresses the leader of the group, whom he does not yet recognize as the Lord; in the next two verses he speaks to all three men. The other two are later identified as angels. The shifting numbers and identification of the visitors are a narrative way of expressing the mysterious presence of God” (The New American Bible, Notes to verse 2).

The Lord appeared “by the terebinth of Mamre.” Paul speaks to the Colossians. Jesus enters a village and speaks to Mary and Martha.

Where and how does God speak to us? Let us spend time this week pondering the mysterious ways God comes to us. Following Mary’s example, let us “[sit] beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak” (Luke 10:39). Then we will be able to proclaim the Lord.

"Apareciósele Yahveh en la encina de Mambré " . . .

National NFP Awareness Week

“I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah will then have a son.” This beautiful promise made by the angel to Abraham in today’s first reading encapsulates the biblical attitude that childbirth is the greatest possible blessing (cf. Genesis 18:1-10). Unfortunately, many people in our society do not see fertility as a blessing, but instead try to attack, block, or poison it with artificial contraception.

July 24-30 has been declared by the Bishops of the United States as National NFP Awareness Week. The Church promotes Natural Family Planning at this time every year because of the anniversary of the publication of the encyclical “Humanae Vitae” by Pope Paul VI on July 25, 1969. This document reaffirmed the Church’s constant teaching that the marriage act has two meanings- unitive and procreative- which should not be separated artificially. The pope explained that the marriage act represents both love and life and that separating these is gravely sinful.

The pope also made some amazing predictions that have come true. He said that if contraception became widespread, there would be an increase in marital infidelity and “a general lowering of moral standards.” If you separate sexual pleasure from family, then you must allow anything. It has in fact come to pass that people now see nothing immoral in every kind of sexual aberration. People feel they have a right to any kind of act, merely because it gives pleasure, even though these actions are contrary to the stability of marriage, family life, society, and the physical health of those who perform them. Pope Paul VI also predicted that “a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and . . . reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires . . .” We see evidence of this in the media, in immodest fashions, and in the rise of pornography.

Let us pray during this special week that more people will discover God’s plan for human sexuality which leads to healthy and wholesome family life!

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“. . . I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God. . . . ” - Colossians 1:25

We are all called to evangelize – to convert individuals and society by the divine power of the Gospel. Our faith is more attractive to others by our actions than by our words alone. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our faith through our actions and words, especially with those closest to us, like our family, friends, and neighbors. Pray for the courage to joyfully express your faith the next time the opportunity arises.

Sharing the Gospel
God created work for each of us to do, and it is important to do it. But Martha was upset because she forgot to stop and make time for Jesus. Mary had the right idea. She took a break from her work to listen to Jesus. Time with Jesus is precious, so we need to make time to rest and enjoy his love.

Prayer
Dear God, thank you for reminding me to stop and enjoy time with you.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself sitting next to Jesus in your favorite chair.

Mission for the Week

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

St. Camillus de Lellis

1550-1614
Feast Day: July 18

This tall Italian was prone to aggression and gambling in his youth. The son of an army officer, he served for three years as a Venetian soldier. During one military engagement, he received a leg wound that would continue to plague him. At age 24, his regiment disbanded, and he gambled away all his property. Destitute, he found work as a hospital servant in Rome to pay for treatment of his ulcerated leg, but he was dismissed for quarrelsomeness. This brought him to become a laborer at the Manfredonia Capuchin monastery, where he experienced a pivotal religious conversion.

In 1575, he tried to join the Capuchins but was denied admission because his leg wound had returned. He went to the hospital in Rome for treatment, and while there, decided to devote his life to caring for the sick. He took a hospital job where he oversaw administration and introduced reforms to patient treatment. This time, he became known for his piety and prudence.

On the advice of friends and his spiritual director, St. Philip Neri, he decided to become a priest. Camillus was ordained in 1584, at age 34, and founded the Order of the Servants of the Sick, more generally known as the Camillians. The order is visibly distinguished by the large red cross they wear. He was canonized in 1746, as the “founder of a new school of charity.” He is a patron of the sick, of hospitals, doctors, and nurses.

“St Camillus de Lellis lived in a particularly complex time, in which a deep longing for holiness but also a tenacious resistance to Gospel-inspired living were widespread. With his rich personality and his witness of charity, he offered the society of his time valuable encouragement for spiritual renewal, thus contributing in an original way to the project of Church reform promoted by the Council of Trent. His life, under the influence of the Spirit, appears as a marvelous story of the love of God, the Creator, and Redeemer, who reveals in a special way his tender compassion as the physician of souls and bodies.” —St. John Paul II, Message of the Holy Father, May 15, 2000

San Camilo de Lelis
1550-1614

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
