MEssage from our Ministers

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the [E]arth, making it fertile and fruitful. . . so shall my word be. . . . - Isaiah 55:10-11

Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, softening it with showers, blessing its yield. - Psalm 65:10-11

. . . in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. - Romans 8:21

. . . some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. . . . Some fell on rocky ground. . . and it withered for lack of roots. . . . Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. - Matthew 13:4-8

Growth and fruitfulness do not happen magically. Preparation, an understanding of seasons, seeds, soil, water, sun, and growth, patience, diligence, hope, and tender caring are required for a fruitful harvest.

In a similar way, we need to prepare, understand, work hard, hope, trust, and care tenderly so the word of God will take root in our lives and produce a rich harvest. If we skip tilling the soil or watering, the land will not yield an increase. If we skip or ignore preparing the soil of our hearts for the richness of God’s word, we will not bear fruit for God.

Let us pray for openness of heart so we will listen to God’s word. Let us risk the hard work of tilling the soil of our lives so we will bear fruit for the Reign of God.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

15th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.”  -  Matthew 13:22

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life?  Are you so caught up in earthly activities that you have no time for God?  Gratitude and generosity are virtues that we should strive to do on a daily basis.  Every decision we make either takes us one step closer to God or one step further away.  What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week as well.

Children's PRayer

From our Minister of religious Education

Sharing the Gospel:
The farmer is God. The seed is God's Word. That makes the soil your heart. If your heart is angry or stubborn, God's Word can't sink in. If your heart is shallow, God's Word can't take root. Instead, you will worry about getting power or riches. If your heart is discouraged by people who hate God, your faith will choke. If your heart is soft, God's Word will change your life, and it will show.

Prayer:
God, help my heart to be soft. Help your Word to change my life.

Something to Draw:
Draw a picture of a seed growing in good soil.

Mission for the Week:
Visit a garden center. Learn why plants need good soil to grow.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Kateri Tekakwitha

1656-1680
Feast Day: July 14th

Kateri Tekakwitha is revered today as the first Native American saint. Only 24 when she died, Kateri is an example of purity, prayer, and most especially endurance in faith. Born in 1656, in a Mohawk village in what is now upstate New York, she was an outsider. Her mother was an Algonquin who was catechized and baptized Roman Catholic by French missionaries in TroisRivières, east of Montreal. Her mother was captured by the Mohawks in a raid and was taken to be the wife of the Mohawk chief Kenneronkwa near present-day Auriesville, New York.

At an early age, Kateri’s village suffered a severe smallpox epidemic, which killed her parents and left her scarred and her vision impaired. Her name, “Tekakwitha”, means “she who bumps into things.” She was adopted by her Mohawk relatives who survived the epidemic, and the survivors of the plague moved to the new village of Caughnawaga.

Like her mother, Tekakwitha sought out instruction from Catholic missionaries that led to her eventual baptism at the age of 19 and her taking the name “Kateri” after St. Catherine of Siena on Easter Sunday 1676.

Kateri faced severe obstacles from the Mohawk tribal leaders, as well as from her adopted family. On Holy Days, Kateri received no food, since she prayed rather than work in the fields.

When she walked to chapel, she was cursed and pelted with stones. Nevertheless, she persevered. She refused to marry despite pressure from her tribe. According to Fr. Pierre Cholenec, a Jesuit priest who was a mentor, Kateri said, “I have deliberated enough. For a long time, my decision on what I will do has been made. I have consecrated myself entirely to Jesus, son of Mary, I have chosen Him for husband and He alone will take me for wife.”

The French missionaries encouraged her to leave her hostile environment and travel to Canada to the St. Francois Xavier mission. Her uncle opposed this move, because he was suspicious of the French and feared it was a ruse to depopulate the village. Even so, Kateri prevailed and traveled the 200 miles by foot and canoe to Canada, where she lived a devout and exemplary life. Called the “Lily of the Mohawks,” she is a symbol of chastity and purity as she sought to do penance to commit her life to God. When she died due to failing health, witnesses noted that her face was miraculously transformed so that all her smallpox scars disappeared. Over the years, people have asked Kateri for divine intercession when suffering from serious illnesses, and their prayers have been answered. Her legacy of healing continues. St. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized on October 21, 2012.

Coming Soon: Brand New Church Bulletin!!

Starting the weekend of September 6th, Church of the Presentation will have a BRAND NEW Church Bulletin, printed by LPi.  LPi offers the latest technology in digital, print and communication products, as well as engagement tools that will allow us to grow a vibrant faith community. Gina Shaughnessy, our parish representative from LPi, is currently working on the business ads for the back cover.  We hope that parishioners will consider advertising on the bulletin, since the revenue from the ads, is what will make the bulletin possible, at no cost to the parish.  It’s a terrific way to get your name in front of the parish families, business owners, and visitors at the church.

Advertisements can be purchased for a business, for a family, or a sponsorship ad for a non-profit organization.  This is a great way for businesses to promote what they do, while at the same time connecting with the community, and benefitting the church at the same time.

Please do give these ideas some thought.  We need and appreciate your help!

If you are interested in participating, or would like more information, you can either call Gina at (916) 200-8979, or email her at GShaughnessy@4LPi.com .
