MEssage from our Ministers

Fifth Sunday of Easter
They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith. . . . - Acts 14:22

The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. - Psalm 145:9

Behold, I make all things new. - Revelation 21:5a

This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. - John 13:35

Jesus “give[s] [us] a new commandment: love one another” (John 13:34). We show God’s love, goodness, and compassion to friend and foe alike because God empowers us to love.

Sometimes, though, we need to be strengthened and reminded that God is with us, that God is “[making] all things new.” Sometimes we forget and become discouraged and so need to be “exhorted . . . to persevere in the faith.” And sometimes we are the ones who need to encourage, strengthen, and exhort others.

Let us pray for, strengthen, and encourage one another, reminding all, including ourselves, that “God will always be with [us] as [our] God” (Revelation 21:3).

Gospel Meditation

Mother Church and the Church’s Mother

As we gather today on the Fifth Sunday of Easter, we hear scripture passages about the church. In the first reading, we hear that the apostles “appointed elders (“presbyterous”) for them in each church.” This means that they ordained priests for them in each city by laying hands on their heads (Acts 14:23; Cf. 6:6, 13:3). The readings then give a litany of beautiful phrases which we understand as referring to our nascent Catholic Church: “a considerable number of disciples,” “the church”, “the holy city, a new Jerusalem,” “a bride adorned for her husband,” “God’s dwelling with the human race.”

We are also in the month of May, the month we dedicate to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the “archetype” of the church because mystically she was the first to be God’s bride and “God’s dwelling with the human race.” Our Lady has a litany of names including “Mother of the Church,” “House of Gold,” and “Refuge of Sinners.”

God has sent Our Lady down to earth many times to encourage the church in our struggles on earth. One of her many apparitions occurred in Laus, France during the years 1664-1718. She appeared to a poor, seventeen-year-old girl named Benoite Rencurel who was tending sheep on a hillside near Laus, in Southern France. Our Lady then appeared to her every day for four months! For hours, Benoite enjoyed the presence of Our Blessed Mother who comforted her, taught her the litany and the catechism, and even helped her corral the sheep! She told Benoite that she wanted a church built which was to be called “Refuge of Sinners,” and she gave instructions that a rectory house was to be built for the priests who would hear confessions in that place. For many years, Laus became a major Marian shrine visited by thousands of pilgrims. The priests there were impressed by the quality of the sincere confessions of the pilgrims who received spiritual direction from the holy woman Benoite, who lived near the church. In the 17th Century, this was an amazing testimony to the important role of women in the church!

We rejoice in this holy time and we thank God for giving us “Mother Church” and for providing maternal care for all God’s children!

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

5th Sunday of Easter
“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." - John 13:34

“As I have loved you,” this is the hard part – Jesus’ love is unconditional; our love usually comes with strings attached. It is easy to love someone when they love you back. But it takes mercy and compassion to love someone when you feel unappreciated, feel used or feel like your opinion doesn’t matter. It takes courage and the grace of God to “love my neighbor” when they may be someone you don’t like, someone you don’t know or someone that doesn’t look like you.

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus gave his disciples a new rule. He told them they had to love each other, just like he loved them. What did Jesus mean? Jesus was very patient with his friends. He forgave his friends when they let him down. Jesus comforted his friends when they were afraid. Most of all he helped them grow closer to God.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to love my friends like Jesus did.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself talking to a friend who is afraid.

Mission for the Week
I will follow Jesus and forgive those who have hurt me.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Paschal Baylon

1540-1592

Feast Day: May 17

Born to a Spanish shepherd family, Paschal was said to have taught himself to read while tending sheep. At age 21, he joined an austere group of Franciscans, devoting himself to prayer and charity. He was sent on a dangerous mission to French Franciscans, and a shoulder wound he received caused him pain for the rest of his life. Long hours of prayer on his knees before the Eucharist earned this lay brother the honor of being patron of Catholic Eucharistic congresses. His emblem in art is a monstrance.

San Pascual Bailón
1540-1592

We are sad to know that Fr. Matthew has been reassigned to serve as the Pastor of St. Mary's of the Annunciation, in Oakdale, CA. His time at Presentation was short, though we are grateful for his heartfelt and uplifting sermons, countless prayers, and the many ways that he actively engaged in our parish community—a short joke, conversations about sports, visiting ministries, and the many times he spontaneously visited our Parish School to check in with the staff and students, never missing an opportunity to play a game of kickball or basketball.

Fr. Matthew will truly be missed! Let us keep him in our prayers as he shepherds the flock in Oakdale. “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. . . .” --2 Corinthians 13:13. Let us pray: for his strength to continue to reach out to all of God's people in compassion, that the fruits of the Holy Spirit continue to guide him on his journey, and for growth in his relationship with God. Though he is being called to journey on a path different from ours, we know that we travel together to the Lord.

Instead of gifts, Fr. Matthew asks that you donate in his name to the 2022 Seminarian Endowment Challenge!

To donate, visit https://stocktondiocese.org/seminarian-education-donation. Add a prayer in his name in the "prayer section."

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
