MEssage from our Ministers

Third Sunday of Easter
We must obey God rather than men. - Acts 5:29

You changed my mourning into dancing. . . . - Psalm 30:12

. . . and the elders fell down and worshiped. - Revelation 5:14

And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. - John 21:12

Peter and the apostles knew it was more important to obey God than people. Obeying those in authority gives way to obeying the authority, the author of life.

The disciples did not at first know it was Jesus on the shore. It was only after the huge haul of fish that they knew “it was the Lord.” Coming to recognize Jesus evolves.

Growth, development, relationship all take time. During this Easter season, let us pray for one another that we will come to know Jesus more and more each day. Let us pray that our faith will move to action as it did for the disciples and then we, too, will make a difference in our world.

Gospel Meditation

On Sunday, May 15, Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Charles de Foucauld, a French priest who lived his last years among the poor in Morroco. At the age of six he was orphaned and soon rejected his Catholic faith, living a life of decadence. He became a calvary soldier in North Africa and later became a renowned explorer of the desert regions of Morroco. Seeing the faith of the Muslims, he was impressed and began to repeat this prayer: “My God, if you exist, let me come to know you.” A visit to the Holy Land confirmed his faith, and he became a priest, then a monk, then a missionary and a hermit among the poor in Morroco. His spirituality of the “life of Nazareth” has inspired the creation of the “Spiritual Family of Charles de Foucauld” and also an international network of support groups for priests called “Iesu Caritas.”

The miracle required for canonization occurred on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death. A worker whose name was also Charles fell fifty feet from the ceiling of a church in Saumur, France. He was impaled by a piece of wood from a pew which passed through his abdomen just below his heart. Miraculously he got up and walked fifty yards to report his accident. A helicopter arrived but Charles could not be put into it because of the piece of wood that was still passing through his body, and so he was taken to the hospital by ambulance, which took an additional 45 minutes.

The manager of the construction company felt an urge to offer prayers for his employee, and he contacted his parish, which coincidentally was named after Charles de Foucauld. He was told that the parishioners had been praying for a full year for the canonization of Charles de Foucauld and that they had just finished praying a novena in preparation for the celebration of the centenary of his death, which was to be held in the parish on the following day. On that day, hundreds of parishioners prayed and they received the news that surgeons had successfully removed the piece of wood, and that Charles would fully recover. In 1984, there was also another miracle that has been attributed to the intercession of Charles de Foucauld: Giovanna Citeri Pulici, an Italian from Milan was cured of bone cancer. This miracle led to the beatification of Charles de Foucauld in 2005.

Blessed Charles de Foucauld had spent years a missionary helping poor people in Morocco who were not Christian. It is significant that this miracle was performed for a man who was not a believer.

All are welcome to come to hear a talk about the Life of Blessed Charles de Foucauld on Saturday, May 14, 10-11:00 am, in the Gathering Space of Religious Education building to learn about the life of Bl. Charles de Foucauld (who will be canonized by Pope Francis on May 15).

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

3rd Sunday of Easter
“. . . Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’” - John 21:17

How often do you actually say the words “I love you” to Jesus, to family members, or to friends? We are made to be in relationship with God and each other. Sincerely telling someone that you love them is the best gift you can give them because it comes from your heart. You are giving them the gift of yourself. We all crave love. Tell someone you love them every day.

Llámelo inmediatamente o mejor aún, vaya a visitarlo.

Sharing the Gospel
After Jesus rose from the dead, he must have looked very different. Jesus helped his apostles catch a lot of fish, just as he had done before. Jesus invited his friends to eat with him, and he still broke his bread to share it in the same way he always had. The disciples still recognized Jesus by the things he did.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to always recognize Jesus.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus cooking fish for his friends.

Mission for the Week
Invite a friend over to eat dinner with your family, so you can share food just like Jesus did.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Pedro poveda castroverde

1874-1936
Canonized: May 4

Watch “Saint Pedro Poveda: Priest, Educator, and Martyr, on FORMED to learn more about our saint of the week.

This biographical drama tells the true story of Pedro Poveda, a tenacious and innovative priest who opened new paths in education and pioneered the rights of women in the early twentieth century. A victim of intolerance, he was murdered at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. In 1974, he was awarded the title of "Educator and Humanist" by UNESCO and was canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

Poveda's success in educating and promoting poor illiterate children living in the Caves of Guadix in Southern Spain received staunch opposition. He had to move to Covadonga, in the Northern mountains. There, with the help of young women, he started a new Christian movement focused on educational opportunities for women, which became the Teresian Association that continues his work today. For its development and growth, he relied on young Pepita Segovia, one of the first women of her time to receive a university degree in education.

Poveda continued his work in spite of the social and political turmoil that intensified in the beginning of the thirties and escalated into a civil war. Caught in the middle of the conflict, Poveda, a man of peace and dialogue, gave his life for his faith, leaving behind a legacy of light and hope.

San Pedro Poveda Castroverde
1874-1936

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
