MEssage from our Ministers

Fourth Sunday of Lent
. . . they celebrated the Passover. . . . - Joshua 5:10

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. - Psalm 34:5

God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. - 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. . . . his father came out and pleaded with him. - Luke 15:20, 28

Passover commemorates freedom from slavery. As we prepare for Easter, which is rooted in the Jewish feast of Passover, we can ask, “What enslaves us? What keeps us from letting go of others’ offenses?”

God doesn’t count our trespasses against us. Do we count others’ trespasses? Can we ask for the grace to let go of counting of others’ faults and transgressions? As God releases us from our trespasses, God entrusts us to release others and to be reconciled with one another.

The father in todays’ gospel epitomizes reconciliation. He was looking for his son, trying to catch sight of him who was a far way off. The father also sought out the older son whose anger kept him away. On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday, (Rejoice!), let us carve out time to rejoice in God’s incomprehensible love for us. Let us ponder how God most graciously seeks us, forgives us, and releases us from what enslaves us. Let us make time to seek God who first seeks us.

Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Gospel Meditation

Lent is a time for us to acknowledge our sins and to rest in our Father’s mercy. It is a time to say with the prodigal son: “I no longer deserve to be called your son . . . ” (cf. Luke 15:11-32)”

I appreciate the fact that my father is still alive and that I can return to our family home and share meals with dad. The prodigal son said: “ I will get up and go to my Father.” Then “he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”

Most of us can feel grateful that we have relatives whom we can visit who always welcome and embrace us. All of us can be grateful that we have that in heaven. Even if we have neglected God and neighbor, all we have to do is go to God and say: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.”

And the extraordinary thing is that as the father in the parable, God is a pushover. He always cries with joy and melts with mercy when we go toward him. He restores us to the family and reinstates us as sons and daughters of his royal family. In ancient times, princes and princesses were given things that were not given to slaves: robes and rings and sandals and succulent suppers. All this was lavished on the prodigal son who returned: “. . . his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet . . . let us celebrate with a feast . . .”

According to our Catholic faith, we can hope for divine sonship in heaven: royal thrones and crowns and a heavenly banquet. Despite our sins. So let us celebrate the feast! Even now we can share a foretaste of the heavenly banquet every Sunday. The Father places us in the place of the elder Son: Jesus.

This week we will begin training and retraining altar servers so that once again our weekly feast will resemble the heavenly liturgy which is described in chapters four and five of the Book of Revelation. The Church has always tried to make the Mass as splendorous as possible so that it will fill our hearts with hope for what is to come. We pray that our youth will “come up here” (Rev. 4:1) and perhaps even consider responding to a call to the priesthood! We need men to serve as “elders” (the word “priest” means “elder”) to help us worship the Lamb who sits upon the throne: “the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne and worship him, who lives forever and ever. They throw down their crowns before the throne . . . ” (Rev. 4:10)

(Ap. 4:10

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

4th Sunday of Lent
“No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.”
- Joshua 5:12

Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.

Sharing the Gospel
Everything you have is a gift from God -- your body, your mind, your food, your clothes -- everything! Sometimes people become proud, and they think they have earned God's gifts. Sometimes people run away from God, and they waste God's gifts. Just remember, it is never too late to run back to God. Every good gift comes from God.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to be truly thankful for all the gifts you have given me.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus hugging you.

Mission for the Week
Name three good things God has given you. Say "thank you" to God for those gifts in prayer.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Francis of Paola

March 27, 1469-April 2, 1507
Feast Day: April 2

Francis of Paola was a man who deeply loved contemplative solitude and wished only to be the “least in the household of God.” Yet, when the Church called him to active service in the world, he became a miracle-worker and influenced the course of nations.

In 1474, he established the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi, who were approved by the Holy See. In 1492, Francis changed the name of his community to “Minims” because he wanted them to be known as the least (minimi) in the household of God. Humility was to be the hallmark of the brothers as it had been in Francis’s personal life.

The life of Francis of Paola speaks plainly to an overactive world. He was a contemplative man called to active ministry and must have felt keenly the tension between prayer and service. He responded so readily and so well to the call of the Church from a solid foundation in prayer and mortification. When he went out to the world, it was not he who worked but Christ working through him—“the least in the household of God.”

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
