MEssage from our Ministers

Third Sunday of Lent
I AM sent me to you. . . . This is my name forever; thus I am to be remembered through all generations. - Exodus 3:14, 15

He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion. - Psalm 103:4

Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall. - 1 Corinthians 10:12

. . . if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! - Luke 13:3

Moses’ encounter with God - I AM - ushered in the Exodus of the Israelites from their slavery under the Egyptians. What follows in subsequent passages is an account of the amazing things God does in freeing the Israelites. Not only does God perform amazing feats, but more importantly, God invites Moses and the Israelites into intimacy, interior freedom, and new life.

So what does this mean for us? As Bishop Cotta once remarked in a homily, “God is God, and I am not.” Let’s take time to ponder that God is God, the great I AM, the one who was, who is and who will be. Let us seek God as we continue our Lenten journey. Let us remember we are creatures and God is Creator.

Let us not co-opt God. Let us not become stiff-necked and think we know better than God. Let us repent of making ourselves and things into gods. Then let us rely on God’s kindness and compassion as we grow into deeper relationship with God.

Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma

""Yo soy" me ha enviado a vosotros.»". . . .

- I Corintios, 10 - Bíblia Católica Online

No señalemos a Dios.

FORTY DAYS AND FORTY HOURS OF REPARATION

The readings for the Third Sunday of Lent are about repentance and consequences. Jesus says: “I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” (cf. Luke 13:1-5) He explains that perishing is a consequence of sin. Nevertheless, he says that the consequences sometimes fall on the innocent. He said the victims of tragedies in the temple and at Siloam were no more guilty than others in Israel. All of this coincides with our common experience. We know that our Western society is a world is full of sin, and we know that thousands of innocent victims die daily in remote places like Ukraine, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Myanmar. In war, it is often the innocent who perish. Our Lady of Fatima said that war is a punishment for sin. This does not mean that God directly causes war. God is love. He does not directly cause war, but if we sin, he withdraws his beneficence and we humans do it to ourselves.

And so, Jesus repeats his warning: “If you do not repent, you will all perish.” The forty days of Lent are an opportunity for us to do that. We will also have two days of prayer and reparation this week in our church. We are inviting everyone to spend an hour in adoration with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament during our “Forty Hour Devotion” from Friday through Sunday morning, March 25-27. We will do this for three purposes: to pray for peace, to make reparation for the sins of our society, and to make reparation for the sin of abortion which is so prevalent in our society and scientific research. March 25 is the perfect day for this because it is the day that God took a body in the womb of the Virgin Mary. He did it so that the “Body of Christ” could be offered as a sacrifice for sins: “When he came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me… Behold, I come to do your will.” (Hebrews 10:5-9)

God himself became a baby in a womb, and so on March 25, we will pray that the dignity of everybody in every womb will be respected. As we gaze upon the Body of Christ in the monstrance, we pray that God will look upon our prayer vigil and have mercy on us, and on the whole world. As Catholics, we believe that out of love we can really help the innocent victims by our prayer and penance.

In our second reading today, St. Paul also says that sin has consequences and that we must therefore remain vigilant: “These things happened as examples for us so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.” (1Cor. 10:6-12)

He aquí , Vengo a hacer tu voluntad." (Hebreos 10:5,9)

(1 Corintios 10:6-12)

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

3rd Sunday of Lent
“…He said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none.’” - Luke 13:7

We can all be like the barren fig tree at times. Do you cling to what you have or do you generously share with others? How will you respond when God asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has given you? Remember, not only are we called to be generous, we are called to develop and nurture our gifts, and return them with increase. Remember, we are called to be generous with all of the gifts; especially the one that means the most to us.

3° Domingo de Cuaresma

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.
-St. Alphonsus Liguori

saINT OF THE wEEK

Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo

1538-1606
Feast Day: March 24

Spanish-born Toribio taught law in Salamanca until 1574 when he was appointed inquisitor of Granada. In 1580, though not yet a priest, he was named archbishop of Lima, Peru, with his episcopal ordination in Seville. After arriving in Lima in 1581, his 25 years of missionary service included diocesan and provincial synods, visits around the vast diocese, clergy reforms, and Indian-language catechisms. He also introduced European religious orders into Peru, opened the first seminary in the New World, and encouraged Indians to become priests.

“St Turibius expressed his deep missionary spirit in certain significant ways, such as his effort to learn different languages, in order to preach personally to all who were entrusted to his pastoral care. However, he was also an example of respect for the dignity of every human person, whatever his or her condition, in whom he always tried to awaken happiness at being a true child of God.” —Pope Benedict XVI, March 23, 2006

Toribio of Mogrovejo
415-493

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
