MEssage from our Ministers

Second Sunday of Lent
I am the Lord. . . . - Genesis 15:7

Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted and wait for the Lord. - Psalm 27:14

. . . stand firm in the Lord. - Philippians 4:1

. . . This is my chosen Son; listen to him. - Luke 9:35

These verbs encourage us to act. Sometimes waiting seems like not acting. We grow impatient because we do not yet have an answer. We are uncertain and can become fearful, fidgety, frustrated.

We are encouraged to stand firm and to wait. Standing and waiting do not look or feel like acting. They look and feel like being still and not doing anything, just being.

During Lent we are asked to pray, fast, and give alms. Tied in with these actions is the need to be still, silent and to wait, to listen.

Listening is an active stance. It calls for presence, awareness, alertness. Let us carve out time to be still and to listen to God speaking to us, drawing us into deeper relationship. Then our acting will be from a place of being in God.

Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma

"Yo soy Yahveh" - Génesis, 15 - Bíblia Católica Online

"14.Espera en Yahveh, ten valor y firme corazón, espera en Yahveh." - Salmos, 27 - Bíblia Católica Online

Gospel Meditation

THE Way

I have been our pastor for almost three years, and Pope Francis has been our pope for nine years today.* You’ve grown accustomed to us, and, like-it-or-not, you’re stuck with us for an indefinite time to come! The only way forward is to work together for a better future for the Church!

In scripture, the word “way” always means a desert way. All roads led through the desert. The way of Israel was the Exodus. In the Old Testament, the most important event was the Exodus, and the most important person was Moses. Their only way forward was to look back at how their nation was born in the desert. There were many journeys through the desert that are described in the Old Testament, but the Exodus was “THE Journey” par excellence!

At the beginning of Lent, we always hear the story of the Transfiguration. In Luke’s Gospel, the glorious Transfiguration on Mount Tabor was the beginning of Jesus’ long march toward his passion on that hill in Jerusalem (ten chapters: Luke 9-19).

It is interesting that Luke writes about the Transfiguration using the words of Moses on Mount Sinai at the beginning of his long march to the promised land: “up the mountain,” “glory cloud,” “they entered the cloud,” “voice calling out from the cloud,” “people afraid,” “Moses spoke to God/Jesus,” “face shining” (compare Luke 9:28-35 with Exodus 24:15-18 and Exodus 34:29-30). It is obvious that Luke was trying to tell us that Jesus is the “New Moses” whom we must follow through the difficult desert of this life!

This weekend our Synod Listening Sessions will mark the beginning of a new “way” for us here at Presentation Parish. We will try to listen to each other and to walk together on the “same path” (“syn”+ “hodos”) toward a better future. We will try not to be like the Israelites who grumbled and complained in the desert, but rather we will respectfully share our ideas as we allow ourselves to be led by our one Good Shepherd who is THE Way!

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

Padre Mark

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

2nd Sunday of Lent
“I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” - Genesis 15:7

Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses, and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?

1° Domingo de Cuaresma
“Ahora he traído los primeros frutos de la tierra que tú, Señor, me has dado”.  - Deuteronomio 26:10

Sharing the Gospel
One night when Jesus prayed, Jesus showed Peter, James, and John what he would look like in heaven. Jesus' face changed, and his clothes glowed brightly. Jesus even talked to Moses and Elijah, who had gone to heaven many years earlier. Jesus was different. He was from God!

Prayer
Dear Jesus, I can hardly wait to see what you really look like in heaven.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus with bright, glowing clothes.

Mission for the Week
Find something that glows in the dark. As you see it in a dark room, imagine how brightly Jesus must have glowed.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Patrick

415-493
Feast Day: March 17

Whether you know him as the man who brought Christianity to Ireland or simply as a reason you eat corned beef and cabbage in March, St. Patrick (415 – 493) is a well-known saint around the world.

St. Patrick was born in Britain of a Romanized family. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders from the villa of his father, a deacon and local official, and brought into slavery in Ireland. He spent six long years there as a herdsman, during which he turned to his faith for strength. He later escaped back to Britain on a ship, where he was eventually reunited with his family.

His years of captivity changed him and brought out a zeal for God and a yearning to spread the message of Jesus Christ. Despite the constant danger of martyrdom, he continued to travel throughout Ireland where he baptized and confirmed in the name of Christ.

San Patricio
415-493

Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
