MEssage from our Ministers

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”
“Here I am,” I said; “send me!” - Isaiah 6:8

I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart. . . . - Psalm 138:1

But by the grace of God I am what I am. . . . - 1 Corinthians 15:10

When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. - Luke 5:11

God invites and calls us into relationship. In that relationship is a corresponding give and take, call and response. Realizing we are invited by God to enter into relationship, we can respond with a wholehearted “Here I am; send me!” or a response of “No, thanks. I’m not interested” or anything in between.

If we accept the challenge and give God our hearts, gratitude and joy overflow. What we then become, by God’s grace, can be given to others as gift. When God is first in our lives, everything else falls into place. Our “yes” to God changes everything.

"«¿A quién enviaré?

Our Lady of Lourdes and the
World Day of the Sick, Feb. 11

This Friday is February 11, which is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is the anniversary of the day when Mary appeared for the first time to
St. Bernadette at a grotto in the town of Lourdes, in southern France, in 1858. Mary appeared eighteen times to Bernadette, who was fourteen years old. Large crowds began to gather during the daily apparitions, despite the fact that only Bernadette could see the “the lady.” Bernadette was very honest and told the people that “the lady” was holding a rosary and wore a white dress with a blue sash. Bernadette asked the lady several times to give her name, but the lady only smiled. Mary revealed her identity during the apparition of March 25, which is the feast of the Annunciation, the day Jesus had become incarnate in her womb. She told Bernadette: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” When Bernadette told this to the local priest, he became convinced that Bernadette was not lying, because he knew that the uneducated people of his town did not know about the Immaculate Conception, a doctrine that had been solemnly defined by the pope only four years before, in 1854.

During the apparitions, Mary did not always speak. Bernadette would pray her rosary as she gazed in ecstasy at the luminous vision. When Our Lady spoke, she said: “My daughter, go and tell the priest to build a church here, and people should come here in procession.” She told Bernadette to pray for sinners and to do penance for them. During five of the apparitions, her motherly face became sorrowful and she repeated the words: “Penitence, penitence, penitence.” The message was very simple: she wanted people to turn away from sin, do penance, and follow in the way of her Son, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

February 11 is also the “World Day of the Sick” because many sick people have been cured at the miraculous spring of water which appeared in the grotto of Lourdes. Here at Presentation Parish, we will have a special Mass for the Sick on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 12:15 PM. Our priests will be available to hear confessions before the Mass. During the Mass, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be given to those who are seriously ill. The Sacrament of Anointing can only be given to those who are severely weakened by age or to people who have a serious illness, which could be life-threatening. However, everyone is welcome to attend the Mass and pray for the healing of body and soul!

The Message of Our Lady of Lourdes reminds us that we should support the Church. She told Bernadette to go to the priests who had the proper authority to build a church. We are part of something bigger, the Catholic Church, which is the mystical Body of Christ on Earth. We thank everyone who shows respect for the proper authority of our bishop by donating generously to the Bishop’s Ministry
Appeal!

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” - Isaiah 6:8

Every day, in little ways and big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, give a friendly smile to a stranger, or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides opportunities to help someone in need. God is always talking to us; we just need to pay more attention. When you hear God calling, have the courage to walk through the door and say, “Here I am, Lord.”

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Paul Miki and Companions

1562–1597
Feast Day: February 6

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruling Japan in the name of the emperor, became alarmed at the growth of Christianity resulting from St. Francis Xavier’s mission, begun in 1549. Because of Hideyoshi’s orders, 26 Christians were arrested, had their left ears cut off as a sign of disrespect, were marched through towns, and were crucified and pierced with lances on a hill outside Nagasaki on February 5. While the public procession and execution was meant to instill fear in Japanese Christians, the joyful witness of the soon-to-be martyrs—who sang hymns on arriving to the hill where their crosses awaited them—evoked compassion and conversion instead. The martyrs were Franciscans, Jesuits, Japanese laymen, and one Korean. Paul Miki, a distinguished preacher, who was the son of a samurai, was the most prominent of the Japanese Jesuits. The martyrs were canonized in 1862; their feast was added to the General Roman Calendar in 1969.

“Asia has given the Church and the world a great host of these heroes of the faith, and from the heart of Asia there rises the great song of praise: Te martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus. This is the song of those who died for Christ on Asian soil in the first centuries of the Church, and it is also the joyful cry of men and women of more recent times like St. Paul Miki and his companions . . . May the great host of Asian martyrs, old and new, never cease to teach the Church in Asia what it means to bear witness to the Lamb in whose blood they have washed their shining robes (cf. Rev 7:14)! May they stand as indomitable witnesses to the truth that Christians are called always and everywhere to proclaim nothing other than the power of the Lord’s Cross! And may the blood of Asia’s martyrs be now as always the seed of new life for the Church in every corner of the continent!

—San Juan Pablo II, Ecclesia in Asia, no. 49

EVENTS
Picture
In honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick, we will have a communal celebration of Mass and the sacramental Rite of Anointing.

If you are experiencing a serious illness, the frailty of old age, or will be having surgery soon, please come and be anointed. Our priests will be available to hear confessions before the Mass.

Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
