MEssage from our Ministers

2nd Sunday of Lent
Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust. . . .  - Genesis 22:2

Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones. . . . My vows to the Lord I will pay in the presence of all [God’s] people. . . . - Psalm 116:15, 18

If God is for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:30

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them. . . . - Mark 9:7

Sometimes we focus on the negative and fail to see the deeper realities of a situation. At first glance, we may see only the seemingly cruel request to give up Isaac. We may see only death and not the life that issues forth from going through death. We may focus on the shadows and no longer remember the warmth and light of the sun.

As our Lenten journey continues, let us pray for one another that we will come to the place of deep relationship with our good and loving God. Let us ask God for the grace to journey through the darkness, disappointments, and deaths into the dazzling brightness of God’s glory.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
2nd Sunday of Lent

Beloved Parishioners,

On the second Sunday of Lent we always hear the Gospel Reading about the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. (Mark 9:2-10) This time of Lent is long and difficult. We need to be strengthened and encouraged in order to endure these forty days of prayer and penance. We are like the apostles who were discouraged when Jesus announced that he was leading them up to Jerusalem and die on Mount Calvary. (Mark 8:31-38). They received encouragement when Jesus led them up Mount Tabor where suddenly the divinity of Jesus shone out of him like the blinding light of the sun. God the Father spoke out of a heavenly cloud and said: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." (Mark 9:7) The vision and the voice convinced them that Jesus was truly the Son of God, and that they should listen to him. They heard clearly that Jesus was the beloved son. Probably they remembered the ancient story about the “beloved son” of Abraham, who was also going to be sacrificed. There was never a son more beloved than Isaac, the Son of Abraham. Abraham had to wait until he was an old man to finally have the son who had been promised to him by God. Then God spoke those strange words to him: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you." (Genesis 22:2) As they went up the hill, the son carried the wood for burning the sacrifice, and he asked his father: “Where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” Abraham gave this answer: “God will provide himself a victim for a holocaust, my son.” This response could have several meanings. It is a strange grammatical construction in the Hebrew language. It could mean that “GOD HIMSELF will provide a victim,” or it could mean that “God will PROVIDE FOR HIMSELF a victim,” or it could mean that “God will provide HIMSELF AS a victim.” All three meanings of this strange prophecy were fulfilled. It was fulfilled when they reached the top of the hill and Abraham was about to sacrifice his son when suddenly God stopped him and provided the sheep with its horns caught in a bush nearby. The prophecy was fulfilled in a complete way nearly two thousand years later when Jesus carried the wood of the Cross up that very same hill. He was the lamb of sacrifice provided by God. And he was God providing himself as a sacrifice. Jesus went all the way to the top of Mount Calvary, and no one prevented the Father from offering his own beloved Son as a sacrifice. Jesus freely offered himself. He had been prepared for this moment by his Father who told him twice that he was the “beloved Son": once at his baptism and again on Mount tabor. God was preparing his Son for his life’s mission; his vocation offer himself in sacrifice. God the Father wants to prepare each one of us, his other “beloved sons and daughters” to offer ourselves. The Father told us to “listen to him.” What did Jesus say that we are supposed to hear? In the previous chapter we see read that Jesus’ previous words were: “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days… Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me…” This is the meaning of Lent. We follow the lamb wherever he goes. We listen to him. We offer ourselves to a life of loving sacrifice in order to save sinners. We consume the Lamb of God in order to be more like him. We trust that God will call us his beloved children and that he will provide.

Padre Mark

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

2nd Sunday of Lent
“I will walk before the Lord.” - Psalm 116

As Christian stewards, we are called to surrender all to the Lord — our time, our talents and even our material possessions. We should willingly give God our entire lives with the confidence that He will take care of us. When we surrender all to the Lord, we are allowing Him to be in charge. Can we not entrust our entire lives to Him knowing He will continue to pour out His love on us? Let us strive to journey up the mountain with Jesus during this Lenten season — growing in our intimate relationship with Him. May we reflect on His profound love for us on this journey. And let us pray for total surrender to His providence.

2º Domingo de Cuaresma
"Caminaré en presencia del Señor." - Salmos 116

Sharing the Gospel
Start with a pile of blocks. Add your imagination and you can build a castle or a city. You can change that pile of blocks to look completely different and wonderful. In today's Gospel, Jesus was completely changed. He started out looking like an ordinary man. Then, right in front of Peter, James and John, something happened. Jesus glowed brightly like the sun. Even his clothes became bright white. Talk about changing into something different and wonderful! God let Peter, James and John see Jesus as he looks now in heaven.

Prayer
God, I can hardly wait to see Jesus glowing in heaven.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself with Jesus, glowing in heaven.

Mission for the Week
Make some lemonade with your family. Then add food coloring to completely change
the way it looks. As you mix the ingredients together, talk about how Jesus was completely changed.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

Saint Casmir

Dates: 1458-1484
Feast Day: March 4

Born in Krakow, Casimir was the son of Casimir IV, king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania, and Elizabeth of Austria. From a young age, he was concerned with the integrity and justice of his father’s rule. He worked to ensure the fair treatment and aid of the poor and less fortunate. He was called the Patron of the Poor because of his love for others and charitable works. Casimir was known to be a humble and approachable man, traits that were not always synonymous with rulers at the time.

Known for his refusal to take up arms, personal piety, generosity to the poor and devotion to the Blessed Mother, he rejected the idea of marrying in favor of voluntary chastity. During a visit to Lithuania, he fell ill, died from tuberculosis at the age of 25 and was buried in the cathedral in Vilnius. Canonized in 1521, he is the patron of Poland and Lithuania.

San Casimiro
1458-1484

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”

Human Trafficking Awareness

St. Josephine Bakhita is the Patron Saint of Human Trafficking Victims.
Josephine Margaret Bakhita, F.D.C.C., was a Sudanese Italian Canossian religious sister who lived in Italy for 45 years, after having been kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan. In 2000 she was declared a saint. February 8th is her feast day for which the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated this day as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking.

On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon.
