MEssage from our Ministers

8th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does one’s speech disclose the bent of one’s mind. - Sirach 27:6

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High, to proclaim your kindness. . . and your faithfulness. . . .  - Psalm 92:2-3

. . . be firm, steadfast, always devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. - 1 Corinthians 15:58

. . . for from the fulness of the heart the mouth speaks. - Luke 6:45

St. James reminds us that “the tongue is a small member and yet has great pretensions. . . . From the same mouth come blessing and cursing” (James 3:5, 10). When computers were first introduced, the acronym GIGO was used: Good in, good out / garbage in, garbage out. Similarly, if we harbor rancor and ill will, then from the store of our hearts will come forth rancor and ill will. If we have kindness and faithfulness in our hearts, then kindness and faithfulness will shine forth.

As we are fast approaching Lent, perhaps it would serve us well to reflect on what is in our hearts and what is not. Let us ask God to cleanse us from our sin and to create within us a new heart (Ps 51: 4, 12).

"2. Bueno es dar gracias a Yahveh, y salmodiar a tu nombre, Altísimo" - Salmos, 92 - Bíblia Católica Online. . . "publicar tu amor por la mañana"

. . . - I Corintios, 15 - Bíblia Católica Online

Good in, good out (bueno entra/ bueno sale),  / trash in, trash out (basura entra/basura sale).

Gospel Meditation

How to Live Lent

In today’s Gospel Jesus gives us an idea on how to spend the 40 days of Lent, which begins this week on Ash Wednesday.

He says: “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit.” (Luke 6:43-44) Sometimes, a tree must be pruned in order for it to bear more fruit. That is Lent. Lent is a time when we cut out some of the superfluous things in our lives which are not helping us to grow in the love of God and to produce good fruits of love of neighbor. That is why we make resolutions for lent. We decide what we might “give up” for lent. We might decide to skip a meal on Fridays, or to give up sweets or meats or media for the entire forty days. We also make a commitment to sacrifice some of our free time in order to increase our prayer life. We might decide to make time for more frequent confessions and Communions, rosaries, and spiritual reading.

None of this is obligatory, except for the fact that we must abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent, and that we must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Here are the regulations from the USCCB regarding fasting and abstinence during Lent:
  • Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics.
  • Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
  • Fasting is obligatory from age 18 until age 59.
  • When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
  • Abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
  • If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
  • Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs, all of which live on land.
  • Birds are also considered meat.
  • Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat.
  • Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish and shellfish are permitted.

From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.
  1. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.
  2. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world.
  3. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest of foods.
  4. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for the reception of grace.
  5. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.
  6. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

8th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.” - Luke 6:43

Are you using your gifts in the way God intended? Have you asked God how He would like you to use them? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name.

8° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
“Ningún árbol bueno produce frutos malos, y ningún árbol malo produce frutos buenos.” - Lucas 6:43

Sharing the Gospel
Let's pretend we're looking through a "blind" eye with a log stuck in it. You see how good you are compared to everybody else. You see other people stuck in sin, and you avoid them or hurt them with your words. Now let's take that log out and look through a good eye. You see your own sins, and you know you need God's kindness and forgiveness. You see other people stuck in sin, and you show God's kindness and forgiveness to them.

Prayer
God, keep my eyes open to see my sins and your kindness. Give me a good heart.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of one good eye and one bad eye with a log in it.

Mission for the Week
When you catch someone in sin (stealing, lying, using hurtful words) be kind. Remember your own sins, and show God's forgiveness.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

Saint Gabriel Possenti

March 1, 1838 - February 27, 1862
Feast Day: February 27

As a disciple of St. John, the Evangelist, St. Polycarp was able to hear about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection directly from those who witnessed it. Because Polycarp was ordained as Bishop of Smyrna by St. John, he is one of three chief Apostolic Fathers along with Clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch. During his life, Polycarp defended the Church against heresies. His important writing, the Letter to the Philippians, quoted the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles, stressing Paul’s authority in the Church and setting out clear arguments against the gnostic heresy that denied Christ’s divinity.

The early period of the Church was a dangerous time to be a Christian and like many, St. Polycarp was martyred. He was captured by Romans and sentenced to burn at the stake. However, the fire did not touch him; instead, it rose up like sails around him. Seeing that the flames would not injure Polycarp, the Romans stabbed him instead. The Martyrdom of Polycarp is perhaps the earliest fully preserved account of a Christian martyr.

"Though you do not see him, you believe, and in believing there is unspeakable joy." - St. Polycarp

San Gabriel Possenti

- San Gabriel Possenti

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
