Merciful and gracious is the Lord. . . . - Psalm 103:8 Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one. - 1 Corinthians 15:49 To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. - Luke 6:27-28 Created in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:27), we do indeed bear the image of the heavenly one. Created in God’s image and likeness, then we should, must, ought to act in a Godlike manner. Makes sense, doesn’t it? However, putting it into practice and living this way are challenging, to say the least. How can we “love [our] enemies and do good to those who hate [us]” when sometimes our emotions spur us on in the opposite direction to act defensively, aggressively, egotistically? Only by God’s grace can we be “merciful and gracious” as God is. Only by God’s grace can we live counter-culturally and go against the inclinations of our baser emotions. Only by God’s grace and gratuitous love and mercy can we hope to live in a Christlike manner. Let us be attuned to moments of God’s presence and grace this week so we can indeed live as God would have us live.

Creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios, entonces debemos y tenemos, la obligación de actuar de la manera que Dios lo hace. Tiene sentido, ¿no? Sin embargo, ponerlo en práctica y vivir de esta manera, es por lo menos, un desafío. ¿Cómo podemos “amar a [nuestros] enemigos y hacer el bien a los que [nos] odian” cuando a veces nuestras emociones nos impulsan en la dirección opuesta; a actuar a la defensiva, agresiva y egoístamente? Solo por la gracia de Dios, podemos ser “misericordiosos y piadosos” como Dios lo es. Gospel Meditation
“YOU WILL BE CHILDREN OF THE MOST HIGH” February 20, Feast of Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?” (Luke 6:32) We are called to something extraordinary. Jesus says it is nothing if we love only the people in our own family or political party or gang. Jesus says: “Love your enemies and do good to them… and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:35-36) We are called to be saints. The saints really did love their enemies. St. Steven prayed for those who stoned him to death. The Japanese martyrs prayed for the emperor who crucified them. St. Maximilian Kolbe smiled lovingly at the Nazi soldiers who beat him at Auschwitz. The saints thought about the salvation of others rather than about themselves. Lent and Holy Week will be a time for us to follow the way of the Lord who fasted for forty days and endured his passion for our sakes. Today is February 20, the anniversary of the death of Saint Jacinta Marto, who at the age of nine died alone in a hospital during the last deadly pandemic, the Spanish Flu of 1918 (which infected 500 million people killed 50 million). Jacinta, her brother Francisco, and their cousin Lucia were the three children who saw the visions of Our Lady of Fatima just a year previously, in 1917. During the first of the apparitions, the Blessed Virgin had asked the children whether they would be willing to suffer for the sake of sinners: “Are you willing to offer yourselves to God and bear all the sufferings He wills to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and of supplication for the conversion of sinners?” Lucia answered: “yes”, and Our Lady added, “Then you are going to have much to suffer, but the grace of God will be your comfort.” During the subsequent apparitions, these small children, (ages 7, 9, and 10), were shown a momentary vision of hell. Our Lady taught them to do penance to save souls. Lucia chose the penitential life of a cloistered nun until her death in 2005. The two younger children both died in the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918. Jacinta suffered greatly during her short life. She developed a great love for sinners and would sometimes refrain from drinking water on hot summer days. Lucia later wrote: “How is it that Jacinta, small as she was, let herself be possessed by such a spirit of mortification and penance, and understood it so well? I think the reason is this: firstly, God willed to bestow on her a special grace, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and secondly, it was because she had looked upon hell, and had seen the ruin of souls who fall therein.” In October 1918, on the evening before Jacinta fell sick, Jacinta told Lucia: “I’ve a terrible headache and I’m so thirsty! But I won’t take a drink, because I want to suffer for sinners.” Lucia asked her one day if she was feeling better. Jacinta said, “You know I’m not getting better. I’ve such pains in my chest! But I don’t say anything. I’m suffering for the conversion of sinners.” On another occasion, Jacinta sent for Lucia and said to her, “Our Lady came to see us. She told us she would come to take Francisco to heaven very soon, and she asked me if I still wanted to convert more sinners. I said I did. She told me I would be going to a hospital where I would suffer a great deal; and that I am to suffer for the conversion of sinners, in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and for love of Jesus… She said my mother would take me, and then I would have to stay there . . . suffering all alone! But never mind! I’ll suffer for love of Our Lord, to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for the conversion of sinners and for the Holy Father.” Jacinta was first treated at a nearby hospital and returned home with a very painful open wound. Jacinta told Lucia about another message from Our Lady: “She told me that I am going to Lisbon to another hospital; that I will not see you again, nor my parents either, and after suffering a great deal, I shall die alone. But she said I must not be afraid, since she herself is coming to take me to heaven.” Lucia often heard Jacinta say these words: “O Jesus! Now you can convert many sinners because this is a really big sacrifice!” Jacinta was taken to Lisbon in late January 1920 and initially stayed at an orphanage. When she became sicker, she was taken to a hospital and diagnosed with purulent pleurisy with osteitis of two ribs – that is severe inflammation of the lungs and affected ribs. On February 10, she underwent an operation to remove the two ribs, but she was so weak that she could only have a local anesthetic, and as a consequence suffered greatly. The operation was successful, but she had a large wound, which had to be dressed daily, causing Jacinta excruciating pain – but she never complained. On February 20 she went to confession and told the priest that she wanted Holy Communion before she died. The priest told her that he would return the following day, but Jacinta died at 10:30 PM. Our Lady had told her the day and the hour. St. John Paul II beatified Jacinta and Francisco on May 13, 2000, calling them “Two candles which God lit to illumine humanity in its dark and anxious hours.” Pope Francis canonized them on May 13, 2017.
MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO “Así tendrán un gran premio y serán hijos del Altísimo” 20 de Febrero: Fiesta de los Santos Jacinto y Francisco Marto. “Si aman sólo a los que los aman, ¿qué hacen de extraordinario? También los pecadores aman a quienes los aman. Si hacen el bien sólo a los que les hacen el bien, ¿qué tiene de extraordinario?” (Luke 6:32) Estamos llamados a algo extraordinario. Jesús dice que no es nada amar únicamente a las personas de nuestra propia familia o de nuestro partido político o de nuestra pandilla. Jesús dice: “Amen a sus enemigos… Así tendrán un gran premio y serán hijos del Altísimo, porque él es bueno hasta con los malos y los ingratos. Sean misericordiosos, como su Padre es misericordioso.” (Lucas 6:35-36) Somos llamados a ser santos. Los santos de veras amaban a sus enemigos. San Esteban oró por los que lo apedrearon. Ella me dijo que yo iría a un hospital donde sufriría mucho; y que debo sufrir por la conversión de los pecadores, en reparación de los pecados cometidos contra el Inmaculado Corazón de María, y por amor a Jesús... Ella dijo que mi madre me llevaría, y luego tendría que quedarme allí... sufriendo todo ¡sola! ¡Pero no importa! Sufriré por amor a Nuestro Señor, para reparar las ofensas cometidas contra el Inmaculado Corazón de María, por la conversión de los pecadores y por el Santo Padre”. Jacinta fue llevada a un hospital local y regresó a casa con una herida abierta muy dolorosa. Jacinta le contó a Lucía sobre otro mensaje de Nuestra Señora: “Me dijo que me voy a Lisboa a otro hospital; que no te volveré a ver, ni a mis padres tampoco, y después de mucho sufrir, moriré solo. Pero ella dijo que no debo tener miedo, ya que ella misma vendrá para llevarme al cielo.” Jacinta decía muchas veces: “¡Oh Jesús! ¡Ahora puedes convertir a muchos pecadores, porque este es un gran sacrificio para mí!” Jacinta fue llevada a Lisboa a fines de enero de 1920 e fue colocada en un orfanato. Cuando su enfermedad se agravó, la llevaron a un hospital y le diagnosticaron pleuresía purulenta con osteítis de dos costillas, es decir, una inflamación grave de los pulmones y las costillas afectadas. “But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back . . .”
- Luke 6:35
Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience—the unkind word or hateful glances we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Praying for our enemies doesn’t change them, it changes us. Mercy and compassion will keep us on the path to holiness.

Sin embargo, si estamos destinados a imitar a Cristo, la mayoría de nosotros necesita practicar misericordia y compasión más frecuentemente. Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

Feast Day: February 23 As a disciple of St. John, the Evangelist, St. Polycarp was able to hear about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection directly from those who witnessed it. Because Polycarp was ordained as Bishop of Smyrna by St. John, he is one of three chief Apostolic Fathers along with Clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch. During his life, Polycarp defended the Church against heresies. His important writing, the Letter to the Philippians, quoted the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles, stressing Paul’s authority in the Church and setting out clear arguments against the gnostic heresy that denied Christ’s divinity. The early period of the Church was a dangerous time to be a Christian and like many, St. Polycarp was martyred. He was captured by Romans and sentenced to burn at the stake. However, the fire did not touch him; instead, it rose up like sails around him. Seeing that the flames would not injure Polycarp, the Romans stabbed him instead. The Martyrdom of Polycarp is perhaps the earliest fully preserved account of a Christian martyr. c. 69-155 | Día de fiesta — 23 de febrero Como discípulo de San Juan, el evangelista, San Policarpo pudo escuchar acerca de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús directamente de quienes lo presenciaron. Debido a que San Juan ordenó a Policarpo como obispo de Esmirna, es uno de los tres principales padres apostólicos junto con Clemente de Roma e Ignacio de Antioquía. Durante su vida, Policarpo defendió a la Iglesia contra las herejías. Su importante escrito, la Carta a los Filipenses, citaba los Evangelios y los Hechos de los Apóstoles, subrayando la autoridad de Pablo en la Iglesia y exponiendo argumentos claros contra la herejía gnóstica que negaba la divinidad de Cristo. “Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”
Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”

Cycle 1 of the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) courses will be starting soon!
The online courses at Dayton University that match the Introduction to Theology for Ministry (ITM) course provide lay ecclesial ministers with the essential teaching of the Catholic Church, as well as, introduce them to the sacramental and spiritual life of the church. These online courses give a basic theological foundation for ministry. This is a one-year course consisting of 7 cycles.
Registration for Cycle 1 closes on January 12, 2022.
This cycle runs from January 16, 2022 to February 19, 2022.
The School of Ministry and University of Dayton VLCFF Partnership is open to ALL in the Diocese of Stockton. Aside from the courses mentioned above, Cycle 1 offers other courses for on-going formation. For more information, please contact the School of Ministry office at 209-466-0636 or email at
