MEssage from our MinistersFourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
. . . to him you shall listen. - Deuteronomy 18:15
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the rock of our salvation. - Psalm 95:1 I should like you to be free of anxieties. . . . adherence to the Lord without distraction. - 1 Corinthians 7:32, 35 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not like the scribes. - Mark 1:22 St. Hildegard of Bingen says, “God is the foundation for everything.” If we build our lives on the rock of our salvation, when anxieties and distractions appear, when storms come and waves crash over us – and they will – our relationship with God will be our stronghold and foundation. Can we listen to God, acclaim the rock of our salvation, adhere to the Lord, and open ourselves to Jesus’ teaching today? If we do, we may well be astonished. Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
. . . " a quien escucharéis." AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Sincerely, Fr. Mark PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In Mass today we hear readings that help us understand why God calls certain people to preach and to lead his people (like Moses and St. Paul). God loves us so much that he wishes he could come down from heaven himself and appear to us and speak to us directly. But God is glorious and extremely radiant. He is pure and holy. He is “Holy, Holy, Holy.” He is so pure and holy that sinful human beings cannot look at his face or hear his voice without trembling. When God appeared on Mount Sinai the people were so afraid that they backed away from the mountain and told Moses to go up alone. They said, “Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.” (Exodus 20:18-19) God heard this request of the people and decided to do as the people asked. God took the people’s idea and declared that he would not appear or speak directly to them anymore, but instead he would send prophets. God told Moses: “This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin and will put my words into his mouth.” (Deut. 18:17-18). These mysterious words God promised to speak to the people in a new way that would not frighten them. It is a prophecy about prophecy. From then on, God would speak to the people by putting his words into the mouth of prophets who, like Moses, were chosen from among the people: “from their kin.” This mysterious prophecy also meant that God would send Jesus who was the greatest “prophet like Moses” because he liberated his people and truly had the words of God in his mouth. The second reading today is from the famous chapter seven of St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, where St. Paul explains why celibacy is better for those who want to “please the Lord” and serve him “without distraction.” (1Corinthians 7:32-38). These readings explain why we need priests and sisters in the church. God has chosen to remain invisible and silent. The people of the world cannot see God or hear his words directly. In order to believe they need to hear priests who preach God’s word, and to see the good example of men and women who give up everything for God. These are his witnesses before the people. Dates: 1562-1597
Feast Day: February 6 Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruling Japan in the name of the emperor, became alarmed at the growth of Christianity resulting from St. Francis Xavier’s mission, begun in 1549. Because of Hideyoshi’s orders, 26 Christians were arrested, had their left ears cut off as a sign of disrespect, were marched through towns, and were crucified and pierced with lances on a hill outside Nagasaki on February 5. While the public procession and execution was meant to instill fear in Japanese Christians, the joyful witness of the soon-to-be martyrs—who sang hymns on arriving to the hill where their crosses awaited them—evoked compassion and conversion instead. The martyrs were Franciscans, Jesuits, Japanese laymen, and one Korean. Paul Miki, a distinguished preacher, who was the son of a samurai, was the most prominent of the Japanese Jesuits. The martyrs were canonized in 1862; their feast was added to the General Roman Calendar in 1969. “Asia has given the Church and the world a great host of these heroes of the faith, and from the heart of Asia there rises the great song of praise: Te martyrum candidatus laudat exercitus. This is the song of those who died for Christ on Asian soil in the first centuries of the Church, and it is also the joyful cry of men and women of more recent times like St. Paul Miki and his companions . . . May the great host of Asian martyrs, old and new, never cease to teach the Church in Asia what it means to bear witness to the Lamb in whose blood they have washed their shining robes (cf. Rev 7:14)! May they stand as indomitable witnesses to the truth that Christians are called always and everywhere to proclaim nothing other than the power of the Lord’s Cross! And may the blood of Asia’s martyrs be now as always the seed of new life for the Church in every corner of the continent!" —St. John Paul II, Ecclesia in Asia, no. 49 Copyright © 2018, Catholic News Service-United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. Human Trafficking Awareness
St. Josephine Bakhita is the Patron Saint of Human Trafficking Victims. Josephine Margaret Bakhita, F.D.C.C., was a Sudanese Italian Canossian religious sister who lived in Italy for 45 years, after having been kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan. In 2000 she was declared a saint. February 8th is her feast day for which the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated this day as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon.
