. . . Oh my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked. - Psalm 71:4 . . . but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. . . . but do not have love, I am nothing. . . . but do not have love, I gain nothing. - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. - Luke 4:28 If we recognize that God is “with [us] to deliver [us],” we will call upon God to “rescue [us] from the hand of the wicked.” As we move from the first reading and responsorial psalm to the second reading and gospel, can we see a movement away from relationship with God? Can we see that when we “do not have love,” nothing else (speaking in human and angelic tongues, having the gift of prophecy, comprehending all mysteries and all knowledge, having faith so as to move mountains, giving away everything) matters? The people in the gospel “were all filled with fury” when Jesus revealed their lack of faith to them. They were so enraged that they “rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.” The violence in their hearts led them to violent action. This week let us pray that God will “rescue [us] from the hand of the wicked,” realizing that we ourselves are often the wicked who are in need of God’s great mercy.

Gospel Meditation
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This year we have a long period of nine full weeks of “ordinary time” between Christmas and Ash Wednesday, and in our parish, we will take advantage of this time to learn about Jesus who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” The readings from the Gospel of Luke which we are hearing on Sundays are about the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. People were asking “Who is he?”, “Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous powers?”, and “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” The answer to these questions lies hidden in the syntax of this last question from today’s Gospel: Jesus NOT the Son of Joseph! The central truth of our religion is that Jesus is NOT the Son of Joseph. He is the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. Last year was a special year honoring Saint Joseph. Many of us consecrated ourselves to St. Joseph who can be like a foster father to us, just as he was Jesus. Those who are devoted to St. Joseph and to the Blessed Virgin Mary receive from them special graces to understand and know Jesus better. No one was closer to Jesus than these, his earthly parents. They knew Jesus and more than anyone else on earth, they knew that Jesus was the Son of God. They were his family on Earth. We can “join” this family by praying daily to Mary and Joseph and asking them: “Who is he? Help me to know Jesus as you knew him.” The saints have discovered that devotion to Mary and to St. Joseph is a “shortcut” to live a life of holiness. If we want a path to holiness, we will find it if we contemplate the Holy Family. Mary and Joseph can help us find “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” They can help us find Jesus. Pope Benedict wrote a beautiful encyclical about faith, and he explained that faith is not primarily a matter of believing in a “theory”, but it is “an encounter with a person.” (Porta Fidei #11) “…In him, all the anguish and all the longing of the human heart finds fulfillment. The joy of love, the answer to the drama of suffering and pain, the power of forgiveness in the face of an offense received, and the victory of life over the emptiness of death: all this finds fulfillment in the mystery of his Incarnation.” (Porta Fidei #13) Sincerely, Fr. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Este año tenemos un largo período de nueve semanas de “tiempo ordinario” entre la Navidad y el Miércoles de Ceniza, y en nuestra parroquia aprovecharemos este tiempo para enfocar en Jesús que es “el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida”. Escucharemos lecturas del Evangelio de San Lucas que tratan de los inicios del ministerio de Jesús. La gente preguntaba "¿Quién es él?" "¿De dónde sacó tanta sabiduría y poderes milagrosos?" “¿No es éste el hijo de José?” La respuesta a estas preguntas está escondida en las palabras de esta última pregunta: “¿No es éste el hijo de José?” Alli esta la palabra “no.” ¡Jesús NO es el Hijo de José! La verdad central de nuestra religión es que Jesús NO es el Hijo de José. Él es el Hijo de Dios, nacido de la Virgen María. San Jose era el esposo de Maria y el guardián de la Sagrada Familia. El año pasado fue un año especial en honor a San José. Muchos de nosotros nos consagramos a San José porque sabemos que él puede ser como un padrastro para nosotros, como lo fue para Jesús. Los que son devotos a San José y a la Santísima Virgen María reciben de ellos gracias especiales para comprender y conocer mejor a Jesús. Nadie estuvo más cerca de Jesús que estos, sus padres terrenales. Ellos conocían a Jesús. Sabían muy bien que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios. Ellos eran su familia en la Tierra. Nosotros también podemos formar parte de esta familia. Podemos ser miembro de la Sagrada Familia si rezamos diariamente a María y a José. Podemos preguntarles: “¿Quién es él?” “Quien es Jesús?” “Ayúdame a conocer a Jesús como tú lo conociste.” Los santos han descubierto que la devoción a María ya San José es un corto camino, un “atajo” para vivir una vida de santidad. “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous. . . .” - 1 Corinthians 13:4
Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have than on the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these things. Pray for more humility. Humility helps us become less “self-centered” and become more “God-centered” for the sake of others.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:
O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.

St. Blaise

Feast Day: February 3 You may be familiar with the annual “blessing of throats” that many parishes in the United States use to commemorate the beloved bishop and martyr. St. Blaise lived in the fourth century in Turkey and Armenia. Due to religious persecution, he was forced to flee and hide in a cave in the back country in order to save his life. History has it that one day a group of hunters stumbled upon where St. Blaise was living. They found the bishop kneeling in prayer, surrounded by wolves, lions, and bears that he had tamed. The legend has it that as the hunters dragged Blaise off to prison, a mother came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s command, the child was able to cough up the bone and thus lived. Today we remember the saint on his feast day by taking two candles, crossing them against the throat, and saying the following prayer: Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. ©LPi |

Falleció 316 Día de fiesta— 3 de febrero Es posible que esté familiarizado con la “bendición de gargantas” anual que muchas parroquias en los Estados Unidos usan para conmemorar al amado obispo y mártir. San Blas vivió en el siglo IV en Turquía y Armenia. Debido a la persecución religiosa, se vio obligado a huir y esconderse en una cueva en el interior del país para salvar su vida. La historia cuenta que un día un grupo de cazadores tropezó con el lugar donde vivía St. Blaise. Encontraron al obispo arrodillado en oración, rodeado de lobos, leones y osos que había domesticado. La leyenda cuenta que mientras los cazadores arrastraban a Blaise a prisión, una madre llegó con su hijo pequeño que tenía una espina de pescado atorada en la garganta. A la orden de Blaise, el niño pudo toser el hueso y así sobrevivió. Hoy recordamos al santo en su fiesta tomando dos velas, cruzándolas contra la garganta, y rezando la siguiente oración: Por intercesión de San Blas, obispo y mártir, que Dios os libre de las dolencias de la garganta y de todos los demás males. The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. Cycle 1 of the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) courses will be starting soon!
The online courses at Dayton University that match the Introduction to Theology for Ministry (ITM) course provide lay ecclesial ministers with the essential teaching of the Catholic Church, as well as, introduce them to the sacramental and spiritual life of the church. These online courses give a basic theological foundation for ministry. This is a one-year course consisting of 7 cycles.
Registration for Cycle 1 closes on January 12, 2022.
This cycle runs from January 16, 2022 to February 19, 2022.
The School of Ministry and University of Dayton VLCFF Partnership is open to ALL in the Diocese of Stockton. Aside from the courses mentioned above, Cycle 1 offers other courses for on-going formation. For more information, please contact the School of Ministry office at 209-466-0636 or email at
