MEssage from our MinistersThird Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jonah began his journey through the city. . . . - Jonah 3:4
Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths. . . . - Psalm 25:4 For the world in its present form is passing away. - 1 Corinthians 7:31 Repent, and believe in the gospel. . . . Come after me. . . . - Mark 1:15, 17 Do we ask the Lord to show us the way? Do we follow the way? Will we take to heart the words of Jesus and repent, and believe in the gospel? Will we make the decision to follow Jesus each day? “We’re in this together” is one of the phrases that has emerged during the pandemic. Do we realize we’re in this – the journey to God – together? The journey is a lifelong one. Let us pray for one another as we journey on the path to God. Let us ask for the grace to be firm in our commitment of discipleship.
AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Sincerely, Fr. Mark PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s readings, God gives us words about the importance of proclaiming the truth of God. In this time of moral and political confusion and divisiveness, our world needs God’s truth. But God does not usually speak to the world directly. Instead, he uses us. God chooses to send messengers to deliver his message. The classic tale is the tale of Jonah (also a VeggieTales movie!) Jonah gets mad at God for making him go to preach about the destruction of Nineveh. Then afterward he gets mad when God does not destroy Nineveh! Preachers must preach regardless of whether they appreciate or are appreciated. The task is urgent. St. Paul says, “I am obligated” to preach to everyone “both in season and out of season”. (Romans 1:14; 2Tim 4:2) In today’s epistle, St. Paul preaches: “I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. For the world in its present form is passing away.” In today’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus also proclaimed God’s truth. In Jesus, however, we see that it is GOD HIMSELF who has come to preach! The Gospel of Mark, which will be read almost every Sunday this year, emphasizes the fact that Jesus is the divine “Son of God.” Nevertheless, some people did not appreciate his preaching. At the beginning of the Gospel of Mark it says that when Jesus appeared publicly for the first time, he was preaching. There is also a subtle reminder of the fact that preaching was sometimes risky business since John the Baptist had been imprisoned for preaching about the sins of King Herod: “After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:14-15) Preaching is important because our world will not change unless people are converted: “How can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? … faith comes through hearing…” (Romans 10:14,17) Let us pray that in this new year, and the coming years, faithful Catholics will not be afraid to take up the task of proclaiming God’s truth. We need priests and religious sisters and good lay Catholics to stand up in the public square and proclaim the truth, just as Jesus did. Through us, Jesus can continue to walk the shores of this world and invite people to walk in the truth: “He passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.” (Marcos 1: 14-15) PrayerspRAYER FOR THE sICK

Feast Day: January 26 The patron saint of widows, Paula was a wealthy Roman widowed with five children at age 32. Another widow introduced her to St. Jerome, a priest and papal secretary to St. Damasus. Jerome became her spiritual director, urging a life of asceticism and charity. When he learned she was fluent in Greek, he enlisted her help in translating Greek biblical texts for his new Latin version of the Bible. Paula had joined the circle of nobility-born Roman women in Jerome’s orbit, and followed him to the Holy Land when he left Rome. She taught herself Hebrew, and exhausted her wealth building a monastery, three convents and a hospital in Bethlehem. Copyright © 2020, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. Human Trafficking Awareness
St. Josephine Bakhita is the Patron Saint of Human Trafficking Victims. Josephine Margaret Bakhita, F.D.C.C., was a Sudanese Italian Canossian religious sister who lived in Italy for 45 years, after having been kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan. In 2000 she was declared a saint. February 8th is her feast day for which the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated this day as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon.
