MEssage from our Ministers

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the favor of God was upon him. -Luke 2:40

The Christian family constitutes a specific revelation of ecclesial communion, and for this reason it can and should be called a domestic church. It is a community of faith, hope, and charity; it assumes singular importance in the Church, as is evident in the New Testament (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2204).

Becoming a disciple of Jesus means accepting an invitation to belong to God’s family, to live in conformity with His way of life: “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:49) (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2233).

“It is in the family that children, from the tenderest age, can learn to perceive the meaning of God, also thanks to the teaching and example of their parents: to live in an atmosphere marked by God’s presence.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Let us model our families on the Holy Family. Let us take some time today to be grateful for our families. May God bless all families and give all the strength and grace to grow in accordance with God’s will.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Today is the Feast of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Today’s Gospel reading clearly says that Jesus had parents: “The parents brought in the child Jesus into the temple” (cf. Luke 2:22-40). It also clearly identifies them as “the child’s father and mother,” although in the Gospel of Luke it is abundantly clear that St. Joseph was actually the child’s foster father since Mary remained a virgin and the Jesus was the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit.

St. Joseph is a great model for fathers of families. He considered it a great privilege to guard and protect the Virgin Mary and her divine child. Even though he was not the natural father, he took his role very seriously and remained faithful.

We are now in a time of social distancing. Everyone is having to stay home more. Hopefully, it can be a time for families to spend more quality time together. Unfortunately, many men practiced “social distancing” even before the pandemic- because they rarely spent time socializing with their wife and children. St. Joseph was not like that. He was close. He was always there for Mary and Jesus in a humble, chaste, and loving way.
On December 8, Pope Francis decreed that this year, from December 8, 2020, until December 8, 2021, will be the “Year of St. Joseph.” The world needs good fathers, and the world has a powerful father in St. Joseph. He is the patron saint of the Church because he continues to protect the Body of Christ and his Virginal Bride.

May the New Year 2021 be a time of blessings for all our parish families! May St. Joseph teach us to remain close to one another in loving intimacy, and to remain faithfully devoted to Jesus and Mary!

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” -  Colossians 3:13

Forgiving is one of the hardest things for people to do.  We can’t give what we don’t have.  We need to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness first before we can give it to others. Go to the sacrament of Reconciliation and receive God’s mercy and forgiveness.  Then, share give the gift of forgiveness with someone – a family member, a friend or a co-worker. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

Sharing the Gospel
Mary and Joseph went to the temple and presented the baby Jesus to God. Two older people recognized that Jesus was the Messiah. They gave him special blessings. They thanked God for this child. Just like Mary and Joseph, your parents gave thanks to God when you were born. They were very happy God gave you to them. They had you baptized in church, and presented you as a gift to God, too.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for bringing the baby Jesus into my life.

Something to Draw
Draw Mary and Joseph carrying the baby Jesus to the altar in the temple.

Mission for the Week
I will offer everything I do for you, Lord, Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Thomas Becket

Dates: 1118-1170
Feast Day: December 29

A London-born clerk to Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, Thomas studied canon law abroad and was ordained a deacon. His support of Henry II’s claim to England’s throne led to his appointment as royal chancellor. He was the king’s great friend until 1162, when, as the new archbishop of Canterbury, he said he changed from being “a patron of play-actors and a follower of hounds, to being a shepherd of souls.” He and the king clashed over many issues, notably the jurisdiction of ecclesiastical courts. Thomas fled to France for six years; soon after his return, Henry’s wish to be rid of this troublesome prelate led to Thomas’ murder by four knights. This medieval martyr starred in two modern plays: Eliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral” and Anouilh’s “Becket.”

Santo Tomás Becket
C. 1118-1170

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. “Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
