Gospel Meditation
Mary Brings us the Joy of God’s Presence! We have entered the new liturgical year, during which we will hear readings from the Gospel of Luke almost every Sunday. As we move into the celebration of the Christmas mystery, we are also being plunged immediately into some of the wonderful mysteries found in Luke’s Gospel. Today at Mass we hear the wonderful story of the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-43). It is one of the joyful mysteries of the rosary, all of which are found in the first two chapters of Luke. It is a story about how Mary carries the Lord himself in her womb. There is something interesting about the way Luke tells this story. The words of the story are carefully chosen by Luke to show what he believes about Mary. Luke believes that God “overshadowed” her and dwelt in her womb in a way that was similar to the way God dwelt in those ancient constructions which were built for him: the arc, the tent, and the temple. In the Old Testament, the Israelites gradually realized that God was traveling with them because they were carrying the stone tablets upon which were written the ten commandments were written. The Israelites built the “ark”, which was a special box to contain the stone tablets. Then they built a tent to contain the ark. When they arrived in the Holy Land, they built a temple to contain the tent with the ark. The temple was built on a hill in Jerusalem in the “hill country of Judah.” When Luke describes the things that happened when Mary went up into “the hill country” to visit Elizabeth, he uses the same words and phrases that were used in the Old Testament to describe the things that happened when David went up to Jerusalem with the ark. If you compare Luke 1:39-56 with 2 Samuel 6, you will see that Luke is trying to tell us that Mary is the “New Ark of the Covenant.” Both David and Mary “arose” and made the journey to Judah. Both David (dressed as a priest) and the infant John the Baptist (the son of a priest) “danced” or “leaped”. David and the people shout for joy before the ark, just as Elizabeth shouts for joy before Mary. David asked, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” while Elizabeth asks, “And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?” The ark remained at Obed-edom’s house for three months, and Mary remained at Elizabeth’s house for three months. These parallels are not accidental. We can see what Luke was thinking when he carefully wrote his Gospel. He is telling us that Mary is the new ark and the new temple where God has chosen to dwell. All of this is very interesting for us because the name of our parish is related to the temple. As we begin this new liturgical year, St. Luke is already helping us to enter into the joyful mysteries of our salvation! Fr. -P. Mark PrayerspRAYER FOR THE sICK

Feast Day: December 23 Greatly revered in his native Poland, this saint, also known as John Cantius, spent most of his life teaching at the University of Krakow, where he was a noted professor of sacred Scripture. He also spent an interval as a parish priest, reputedly forced on him because of academic jealousy. At the university, he impressed on students the need for moderation and good manners in controversy, and was famous for his boundless generosity to Krakow’s poor. A personal austerity contributed to his reputation for holiness: He ate no meat and slept on the floor. Copyright © 2020, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC. San Juan Cancio
Copyright © 2020, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC.
