MEssage from our Ministers

3rd Sunday of Advent
I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul. . . . - Isaiah 61:10

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. . . .  - Luke 1:46, 47

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks. . . .
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, Make straight the way of the Lord. . . . - John 1:23

On this Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, let us make time to be with God in an intentional way. Let us savor “the greatness of the Lord” (Luke 1:46) in our own lives. Let our rejoicing redound to the ends of the Earth as we realize who is in our midst.

Then we will be able to proclaim by our lives that “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God” (Isaiah 61:1-2).

"...Estad siempre alegres. 17.Orad constantemente. 18.En todo dad gracias..." I Tesalonicenses, 5 - Bíblia Católica Online

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
3rd Sunday of Advent

Last week I explained that this coming year will be the year of the Gospel of St. Mark, that beginning now in Advent we will hear readings from the Gospel of Mark almost every Sunday. I say “almost” because there will exceptions. Since the Gospel of Mark is very short, it will be supplemented with readings taken from the Gospel of John. The Gospel of Mark is short because it focuses on the actions of Jesus rather than his words. The Gospel of John, on the other hand, includes the long sermons of Jesus, as well as many reflections and interpretations of the life of Jesus.

At Mass today we will hear a reading from the Gospel of John which explains that Jesus is “the light” that was coming into the world. John the came to announce his coming: “A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light so that all might believe through him. He was not the light but came to testify to the light.”

Today is the third Sunday of Advent and so we light three candles of the Advent Wreath. Little by little the darkness of our world is being overcome by the joy which we will celebrate at Christmas. Even though we may not be able to enter our bright, warm church, the light of Christ will enter our hearts if we welcome him in our hearts and receive Him in Holy Communion. Jesus says: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8:12)

“... As many as received him, to them gave power to become the sons of God.” (John 1:12)

(Juan 8:12)

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

Third Sunday of Advent

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus  for you” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16 - 18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship.  “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need.  “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day.  “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God.  Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations and shows our dependence on God.

Sharing the Gospel
John the Baptist prepared the way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He shouted in the desert, "Get your soul ready. The Lord is coming." Today John still warns you to get your soul ready for Jesus. Ask God to forgive you. Then forgive yourself and others. Shout to the world. Be a witness by your actions. Show that you believe in God. Then you will be ready when Jesus comes to take you to heaven with him.

Prayer
Lord, forgive me for all of my sins and help me to be different because I love you.

Something to Draw

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

saINT OF THE wEEK

St. Lucy

Dates: 284-304
Feast Day: December 13
This saint, venerated by Christians since her own time, likely was martyred in Sicily, probably during the persecutions of Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruled 284-305. Legends about Lucy include a rejected suitor denouncing her as a Christian and miracles that saved her from life in a brothel, from being burned at the stake, and from having her eyes plucked out.

“Lucy reminds us of a value which seems to me very important for you too: courage. She was a young defenseless woman, however she faced torture and a violent death with great courage, a courage that came to her from the Risen Christ, with whom she was united, and from the Holy Spirit, who dwelt within her… Lucy tells us that life is made to be given. She lived this out in the supreme form of martyrdom, but the value of the gift of self is universal; it is the secret to true happiness. Man does not become completely fulfilled by having or by doing. One is fulfilled by loving, i.e. by giving of oneself. And this can also be understood as the secret of the name ‘Lucy’: a person is ‘full of light’ to the extent that he or she is a gift to others. In reality, every person is a gift, he or she is a precious gift!” —Pope Francis, December 13, 2014

San Lucía
284-304

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
