MEssage from our Ministers

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. - Wisdom 6:12

O God, you are my God whom I seek. . . . - Psalm 63:2

Thus we shall always be with the Lord. - 1 Thessalonians 4:18

Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him! - Matthew 25:6

Do we actively seek God? Do we make time for prayer, silence, and solitude? Do we choose to be in relationship with God? Let us pray for the grace to seek God as God seeks us.

I FLED Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him. . . .

Nigh and nigh draws the chase, with unperturbèd pace, deliberate speed, majestic instancy; and past those noisèd Feet a voice comes yet more fleet— ‘Lo! naught contents thee, who content’st not Me!’

Shade of His hand, outstretched caressingly? Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest, I am He Whom thou seekest! Thou dravest love from thee, who dravest Me.’

"Y así estaremos siempre con el Señor." I Tesalonicenses, 4 - Bíblia Católica Online

"¡Ya está aquí el novio! ¡Salid a su encuentro!""Mateo, 25 - Bíblia Católica Online

¿Buscamos activamente a Dios?

Del The Hound of Heaven, Francis Thompson

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
“The Bridegroom is long delayed.”
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells a story about waiting for our happiness to come. Our earthly life is a delay before we get to enter the heavenly wedding banquet. We sit in dreary darkness with only the dim light of faith. Jesus compares it to ten virgins who sit drowsily together in the dark, waiting for the bridegroom to arrive so that they can enter the wedding feast (Matthew 25:1-13). In this outer darkness, they cannot see the bright festivities inside, and they cannot yet see the bridegroom, and so “they all became drowsy and fell asleep.” But there is a difference: five of them were wise and had flasks of oil so that their lamps did not go out. With this story, Jesus is telling us that in this dark life we must have that extra something, which is faith. The difference is that some people are inwardly prepared to receive that which they cannot see. Only those who have faith are able to enter the heavenly feast and welcome the Bridegroom who is Christ.

This month the parents of our parish are teaching their children about the importance of faith. Sometimes it seems that life is a drudgery and that we are always having to wait in the darkness. We are waiting for an end to the pandemic. We are waiting for an end to the political and social unrest in our country. The darkness is so thick that we realize that no politician will be able to overcome it until the Prince of Peace arrives (Mt. 22:2).
The thick oil that can keep our lamps burning is faith, which we need in dark times. But it is also an admixture of hope and love. We must be sources of hope for those around us who might be discouraged by the darkness, and we must be radiate love which shows itself in good works. (James 2:18). As St. Paul says, there are three important things: “faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.” (1Cor. 13:13).

The church teaches us that these three virtues are the “theological virtues” (theo = God in Greek). God gives us these three virtues so that, like the wise virgins, we will be capable of entering the heavenly banquet with God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: “The theological virtues relate directly to God. They encourage Christians to live in a relationship with the Holy Trinity. They have the One and Triune God for their origin, motive, and object… They are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life.” (Catechism, #1812-1813)

It is said that these three virtues are so completely interrelated that you actually cannot have one without the other two. And if a person lacks one of them, then that person actually has none of them. A person who lacks hope, for example, is actually a person without love, because true love is always optimistic, and believes that things will work out. Also, no one could have real hope and true love unless they have some kind of faith. An example of this would be a person who- through no fault of his own- does not know about God, but who demonstrates true hopefulness and authentic works of charity. Christ said that those who care “for the least of my brothers” would seem to have the theological virtues necessary to enter heaven (Mt. 25:31-46). Naturally, it is important to make effort to practice all three of the theological virtues, in order to make sure that we are not deficient in any of these three necessary virtues on judgement day (Catechism #1814-1820).

In order to grow in the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love, you can rededicate yourself to the three ways of participating in the life of the church: praying, serving, and giving. Every year we ask all our parishioners to rededicate themselves to these three aspects of Stewardship. You will grow in faith by praying. You will give hope to others by serving and giving. You will show your love of God and neighbor whenever you pray, serve, and give. Please recommit yourself to doing your part in the mission of our parish by filling out your annual “Stewardship Commitment Card”! If you fill out your card and indicate which ministries you would like to participate in, and how you are willing to pray and to give, then you will be preparing yourself to meet the Lord in the joy of heaven, as St. Augustine wrote:
“Watch with the heart, watch with faith, watch with love, watch with charity, watch with good works… make ready the lamps. Make sure they do not go out… renew them with the inner oil of an upright conscience; then shall the Bridegroom enfold you in the embrace of his love and bring you into his banquet room, where your lamp can never be extinguished.” (Sermon 93)

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”  - Matthew 25:13

Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our Faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circumstances. Don’t delay. How is God calling you to use your gifts today?  None of us is guaranteed tomorrow.

Sharing the Gospel
You do not know the day or hour when God will come for you. Be prepared with the flashlight of your soul. Love God with your whole mind, heart, and soul. Love your neighbor as yourself. When you follow these two commandments, it lights up your soul. When you forget to obey them, your light grows dim.

Make sure your heart is ready for Jesus. One day Jesus will come back. If your heart is empty and dark - without love - you will be left out. But if your heart is filled with God's love for other people, Jesus will bring you into heaven with him forever.

Prayer
God, fill my heart with your love. I want to be ready for Jesus.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself helping your parents set the table because you love Jesus.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Saint FrAncis Cabrini

DATES: 1850-1917
Feast Day: November 13th

In 1946, Mother Cabrini was the first U.S. citizen to be canonized; she is the universal patron of immigrants. She was born in Italy, the youngest of 13 children, and became a schoolteacher. Denied admission to two religious orders because of frail health, she was given charge of an orphanage in Codogno. In 1880 she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart with seven of her former orphans. The order spread rapidly from northern Italy to Rome, and then in 1889 to New York City, where Mother Cabrini became famous for her work among Italian immigrants. Before dying of malaria in Chicago, she had opened schools, orphanages and hospitals around the United States, South America and Europe.

 Sta. Francisca Xaviera Cabrini
1850-1917

Saint of the Month

A Message from Fr. Mark:

Our October SAINT OF THE MONTH is St. Francis of Assisi. There are several beautiful videos about St. Francis in Formed.org (FREE for our parishioners).

Hello, parents of our children’s catechism program (Family of Faith).
On the website Formed.org there are several films and documentaries about St. Francis of Assisi (our saint of the month for October), including a cartoon version for children! Watching this together can be part of your children’s catechism for this year! But before watching the cartoon on with your children, you may want to watch their documentary so that you can have an understanding and be able to explain it to your children.

My favorite full-length film about St. Francis is unfortunately not available to us for free on Formed.org. It is the 1989 film with Mickey Rourke as St. Francis. I prefer this film because it realistically shows the hardships of the life of poverty embraced by St. Francis (Zeffirelli’s 1972 film is too flowery and fanciful!)

Francesco is a 1989 docu-drama relating in flashback St. Francis of Assisi's evolution from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and finally to a full-fledged saint. The film was based on Hermann Hesse's Francis of Assisi, which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. It was shot in the Italian region of Abruzzo and it stars Mickey Rourke and Helena Bonham Carter. Greek composer, Vangelis, provided the musical score.

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
