MEssage from our Ministers

1st Sunday of Advent
Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, with the mountains quaking before you, while you wrought awesome deeds we could not hope for, such as they had not heard of from of old. . . . Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands. - Isaiah 63:19 – 64:2, 7

Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name.
  - Psalm 80:10

God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 1 Corinthians 1:9

Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert!” - Mark 13:33

As we begin the new liturgical year on this First Sunday of Advent,
let us seek the light
be willing clay in the Potter’s hands
be grateful for the gift of new life
renew our commitment as disciples
be awake and alert to God’s presence and action in our lives.

Let us continue to pray for our parish, our community, our city, state, nation, and world during this time of pandemic. Let us remember that even amid uncertainty, darkness, and fear, God is present.

I Corintios, 1 - Bíblia Católica Online

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
A Space for God

Last week, Saturday, November 21 was the Feast Day of our parish: The Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgen Mary. We announced the winners of our Essay Contest. Participants wrote one-page essays with their thoughts about the possible significance of the “little box” in our parish logo, which has the letter “P” with a small box that is superimposed on it.

What does that “little box” represent? To write my own essay, I did what our school children probably did: an internet search. I typed “symbolism square” and the first thing that popped up was: “The square symbol represents structure, balance, logic, and law and order.” A native Indian tribes website said, “The square symbol visually represents an enclosed space. It symbolizes a safe place, permanence, and security.” Thus, a square is a symbol of a house or a safe building.

However, since we are examining our parish logo, a winning essay should explain the relationship between the “P” and the square. The “P” stands for “Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple.” Obviously, therefore, the little box represents the temple. In the Old Testament, the most common name for the Jerusalem Temple was simply “the house” for God (1Kings 6:11ff). It is a place for God to dwell here on Earth. For the Israelites, the holiest thing was the stone tablets upon which were written the ten commandments. These were the “words of God” and so they were always kept in a special box called the Ark of the Covenant. The Israelites carried the Ark through the desert and kept it in a tent called the “Holy of Holies” (15-foot square). When they arrived in Jerusalem and built a huge permanent temple, the Arc and the tent were carried in and placed behind a huge curtain in a special room called the “Holy of Holies” which was a perfect cube: “20 cubits by 20 cubits by 20 cubits” (cubit=20 inches).

When Jesus came and “pitched his tent among us” (John 1;14) and died for us, the temple curtain tore and God’s presence gushed forth into the wide world (Mt. 27:51). Now God wants to dwell within us who are his church, the new temple for God. St. Paul wrote: “Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1Cor. 3:16) The last pages of the Bible describe visions of the church which is his new dwelling place: “Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them” (Rev. 21:3). The church is the bride of the Lamb who in scripture appears as a heavenly city for him to dwell in, and which also has the shape of a cube: “’Come here. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb…’ He took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem… The city was square, its length the same as its width. He measured the city with the rod and found it fifteen hundred miles in length and width and height” (Rev. 21:9,10,16).

In a wonderful way, the square in our parish logo also represents the Blessed Virgin Mary herself. What is the safest place we can imagine? A womb! It is said that the womb is such a safe and secure place after a man leaves it, he spends the rest of his life trying to return there. The womb of the Virgin Mary is a place that God created for himself to dwell in. She is the temple called “the House of Gold”. She was the first place where God really dwelt on Earth. The saints say that Mary is “God’s paradise”, his “garden enclosed.”
(Song of Songs 4:12) But the amazing thing is that God does not jealously guard his paradise to prevent us from entering. He shares his dwelling place with us. He says, “Behold
Continued on page 9
Continued from page 1
your mother.” (John 19:27).

So, the “little box” also represents each one of US, because God wants us to be his temples where he can dwell. The box represents the purpose of religion. It means that we should be like the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is the archetype of Mother Church.

Thus, we see that the “little box” in our parish logo does not mean that Presentation Parish is a safe place for God’s children, with fences and gates and locks and cameras and security guards. It means that God invites us to enter into Communion with him and that he wants to enter into us and dwell within us, as happened for the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We are drawing close to Christmas, a time to remember that Christ entered the womb of the Virgin Mary and entered our world. Unfortunately, we may not be able to enter our church to celebrate this. We look forward to the day when we can enter his heavenly temple!

Aquí ahora voy a escribir mi opinión.

Dice: "He ahí a tu madre." (Juan 19:27)

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

First Sunday of Advent

“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.”  -  Mark 13:33

We all take things for granted.  In particular, we take time for granted.  We make our lives too busy.  We plan our time, our days, weeks, months, even years in advance.  Remember, our time on earth is a gift.  None of us knows how long we will be here.  Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day.  Take time in silence, every day, and listen to how God is calling you right now to help build His kingdom on earth.

Sharing the Gospel
When you play on a baseball team, you learn how to pay attention. Your coach reminds you and your teammates to stay ready. You learn to watch the ball. Those are good lessons to learn, because Jesus wants you to pay attention, too. Keep your eyes and your mind on Jesus, so you're ready when he comes.

Prayer
Jesus, help me to stay ready for you.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

St. Francis Xavier

Dates: 1506-1552
Feast Day: December 3
Known as the Apostle to the Indies and to Japan, Francis was born in Spanish Navarre, the youngest in a large family. He studied at the University of Paris, where he met St. Ignatius of Loyola, and was among the first seven Jesuits who vowed to be spiritual soldiers for Christ. They were ordained as a group in 1537. For 11 years, from 1541 until his untimely death after only two weeks on the Chinese coast, Francis evangelized in the East Indies, Mozambique, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Japan. A missionary prone to seasickness who had trouble learning foreign languages, Francis is the patron saint of missionaries, Borneo, the East Indies, India, Pakistan, Japan and Outer Mongolia.

St. Francisco Javier
1506-1552

Saint of the Month

A Message from Fr. Mark:

Our October SAINT OF THE MONTH is St. Francis of Assisi. There are several beautiful videos about St. Francis in Formed.org (FREE for our parishioners).

Hello, parents of our children’s catechism program (Family of Faith).
On the website Formed.org there are several films and documentaries about St. Francis of Assisi (our saint of the month for October), including a cartoon version for children! Watching this together can be part of your children’s catechism for this year! But before watching the cartoon on with your children, you may want to watch their documentary so that you can have an understanding and be able to explain it to your children.

My favorite full-length film about St. Francis is unfortunately not available to us for free on Formed.org. It is the 1989 film with Mickey Rourke as St. Francis. I prefer this film because it realistically shows the hardships of the life of poverty embraced by St. Francis (Zeffirelli’s 1972 film is too flowery and fanciful!)

Movie: Francesco

Francesco is a 1989 docu-drama relating in flashback St. Francis of Assisi's evolution from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and finally to a full-fledged saint. The film was based on Hermann Hesse's Francis of Assisi, which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. It was shot in the Italian region of Abruzzo and it stars Mickey Rourke and Helena Bonham Carter. Greek composer, Vangelis, provided the musical score.

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
