AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

Gospel Meditation

Strengthen Your Hearts

Happy New Year! Today is the first day of the new liturgical year, and that is why today we hear a Gospel reading from the Gospel of Luke. We will hear readings from Luke almost every Sunday during the coming year. Today’s Gospel is similar to the one we heard last Sunday from the Gospel of Mark. They are similar because they are slightly different versions of the great discourse that Jesus gave just before his passion. Just before the temple of his body would be destroyed, Jesus spoke about how the Jerusalem Temple would be destroyed, and about how things would be set aright when he would return: both at the end of time, and during the time of the church, which is the new temple.

The version written by St. Luke is slightly different (cf. Luke 21:25-36). Luke was a physician, and perhaps that is why he included certain anatomical words. He is the only Gospel writer who was careful to include the things Jesus said about how we should take care of our body parts, especially the HEART. Luke recalled the words that Jesus spoke about what we should do when he comes again: “…Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness…” St. Luke the doctor, and Jesus the Divine Physician, are very concerned about our well-being. We should stand up straight and hold our heads high because we are God’s beloved children. We should have a healthy heart. Drunkenness and debauchery can contribute to “kardiai barēthōsin,” which is Greek for “bloated heart”. Avoid cardio sclerosis, which paralyzes our hearts! Various Bibles translate this word as “overcharged”, “weighed down”, “dulled”, and “depressed”. Our hearts must be free of earthly cares if we want to be “light-hearted.” At the end of time, those who do not have strong, loving hearts will feel weak and fearful: “People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world.” Jesus warns us to make ourselves strong: “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Here at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, we optimistically look forward to the new year and whatever it will bring. We are not afraid because we are strengthened by the love of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary!

Month of November

Let us pray for all the Faithful Departed.

November is called the month of All Souls. More recently, it has been called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. Our growth in Christian perfection takes a long time. At the time of our death, many of us might not be saints yet. But God, in His mercy, allows for those who love Him to experience purification after death. Our word for that state is Purgatory. It’s the antechamber of heaven, so to speak. Here on earth, we can pray for the souls in Purgatory. Just as we have special intentions for family and friends here on earth, we can pray for those who have died. It’s also a good act of Christian charity to pray for the forgotten, those who have no one else to pray for them.

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

1st Sunday of Advent
“But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” - Luke 21:28

We celebrate Advent each year in preparation for the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await His second coming. What will you do differently, this Advent season, to grow in friendship and love with Jesus? How will you inspire others to do the same? Start by sharing your God story with others, especially those closest to you. Invite and accompany them on their faith journey this Advent.

Sharing the Gospel
One day Jesus will come back to take us home to live with him in heaven. So when scary things happen around us, we do not need to be afraid. We can stand up tall because we know heaven will be so much better than this world.

Prayer
Dear God, when I am afraid, help me to be brave and trust in you. I know heaven will be wonderful.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus coming back in the clouds, ready to take you to heaven.

Mission for the Week
Write down one thing that scares you. Tell God about it, and ask him to help you to be brave.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.
-St. Alphonsus Liguori

Saint John Damascene

675-749
Feast Day: December 4

The last of the Greek fathers, John was born in Damascus, Syria. He succeeded his father as chief representative of the Christian community to the caliph in Damascus, then under Islamic rule. However, after serving some years, he was forced to resign in 719 because of his faith. He entered a monastery in the mountain wilderness between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea, and lived there until his death. As a priest, he devoted himself to prayer and writing, producing 150 works on theology, philosophy and religious education, as well as a defense of the veneration of icons and numerous hymns. His work was widely cited in the Middle Ages. Pope Leo XIII declared him a doctor of the church in 1890.

San Juan Damasceno
675-749

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
