MEssage from our Ministers

All Saints' Day
They prostrated themselves before the throne [and] worshiped God. . . . - Revelation 7:11

Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or who may stand in his holy place? - Psalm 24:3

See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called children of God. - 1 John 3:1

When Jesus saw the crowds he went up the mountain. . . . Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. - Matthew 5:1, 12

Our stance before God is creature before Creator, but we are not merely creatures. We are “children of God” (1 Jn 3:1), called to be in relationship with God.

The seal from the first reading denotes that we belong to God. The one who can ascend the mountain of the Lord is “One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean” (Ps 24:4). Mountains are typically the place of theophany, the place where God reveals Godself. This relationship with God is of utmost importance.

Jesus lays out a blueprint in the Beatitudes for how this relationship is expressed. If we follow Jesus’ invitation, we will indeed be richly blessed.

How will we share those blessings with someone today?

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Picture
Picture
Dear Parishioners,

Today is November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints. It is a holy day of obligation every year because it is the day we celebrate the success stories of humanity: those who made it to heaven. It is a day that makes the demons furious because each saint represents their failure to tempt these souls away from God. This year it falls on Sunday, and so everyone gets to hear the special scripture readings about “the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.” (Rev. 7:14)

The Gospel reading explains why they attained the beatific vision: “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” (Mt. 5:8)

The Family Catechesis books, which we are now distributing in our parish, will give us a saint for each month. The first saint which we will teach our children about this year is St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226). He is everybody’s favorite saint because he joyfully gave away his wealth to the poor and spent his life proclaiming God’s love to everyone, even to the animals! He is my special patron because I was born in the city of San Francisco, and I took his name when I received confirmation here in this parish!

Francis had a pure heart. A person with a pure heart is deserving of admiration and confirmation.

I will share a few of my favorite stories about St. Francis, which you can share with your children.

Francis’ heart was so pure that the birds would gather and quietly listen as he preached to them.  A wolf heeded his exhortation to stop terrorizing people near the town of Gubbio. A cricket would come to sit on his finger and sing every day for a week until he announced to his brothers: “We should grant Sister Locust permission to go wherever she likes. She has given us pleasure enough. The flesh could take vainglory in this.” The cricket flew off and never returned. (We Were with Francis, p. 121)

Another time Francis and his companions were passing through a noisy marketplace and Francis suddenly asked them: “Do you hear that?” They were puzzled and then amazed when Francis led them to a corner of the street behind one of the vendor’s tables and showed them a cricket that was singing. Francis explained that when one’s heart is pure; it will be attuned to God’s creatures.

Like many saints, Francis was attacked by demons, but an ancient text explains that he defeated them by having a joyful heart: “St. Francis dealt harshly and severely with his body from the beginning of his conversion until the day of his death, but his chief and most particular concern was seeing to it that inwardly and outwardly he would be and remain spiritually joyful. He said that if the servant of God would always strive to have and keep inner and outer joy, the fruit of a pure heart, the demons would have no power to harm him. They would say: ‘This servant of God is joyful in tribulation and joyful when all goes well. We can’t find an entrance to get in and do him damage.’” (We Were with Francis, p. 72)

A person with a pure heart is not saddened by anything, except at the sight of sin. One day St. Francis was walking along a road near his favorite chapel: St. Mary of the Portiuncula. As he walked, he was weeping and wailing loudly. A man saw him and thought he was in pain. He asked: “Brother, what’s the matter?” Francis answered: “I ought to travel everywhere, and not be ashamed, weeping and wailing for the passion of my Lord.” The man then walked along with him, he too wailing and shedding abundant tears. (We Were with Francis, p. 160)

Those who are in love make extravagant requests. Francis loved Jesus so much that he wanted to unite himself completely to him. He asked for two things: that he might experience the pain that Jesus experienced on the Cross, and that he might experience the love with which Jesus gave His life for the world.  When Francis meditated on the crucifixion, his followers would hear him crying: “Love is not loved.” Near the end of Francis’ life, a Seraph angel appeared to him and marked him with the wounds of Jesus, the stigmata, on his hands, feet, and side. The gentle hands and the pure heart that had shown such great love for everyone became like those of Christ!

Sincerely,

Fr. Mark

Queridos feligreses,

(We Were with Francis, p. 121)

(We Were with Francis, p. 72)

(We Were with Francis, p. 160)

Sincerely,

Fr. Mark

All Saints' Day
”Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.”  - Matthew 5:11

We are all at different points on the path to holiness, on getting to Heaven and becoming a saint.  Part of the journey is being mocked and ridiculed by others.  When this happens, how do you respond?  Do you become silent?  Do you react in anger or do you react with love?  Fortunately, as one Body of Christ, we are united with the saints already in Heaven.  Ask your favorite saint for guidance in defending the Faith.

Sharing the Gospel
When you are merciful, you are kind and forgiving. Your actions teach others how to love God and each other. You visit the sick. You comfort those who are crying. You pray for those who are in jail. You share money, food, water, shelter, and clothing with those who need it. You forgive the people who hurt you. When you are kind and forgiving to other people, they will also be kind and forgiving to you.

Instead of being bossy, be kind and humble. Instead of being angry, work hard to make peace. Instead of wanting to be popular or rich, spend time with kids who are lonely. When you care about other people, God will smile. He will reward you in heaven.

Prayer
Lord, I want to be kind and forgiving, please help me.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

Solemnity of All Saints

Feast Day: November 1st

All Hallows’ Day, the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day is a celebration of all Catholic saints held on November 1 each year. “On this solemnity, we recall the holy men and women who, having completed their earthly journeys, now live forever with God. These saints, though not canonized, offer us models of abiding faith and love of God and neighbor” (Essential Guide to Seasons and Saints, 109).

Veneration of the saints fosters our faith in God and does not detract from it. Rather, our faith in God is strengthen by our relationship with our brothers and sisters in the faith who are in heaven. The Church teaches that by imitating the virtues lived by the saints, the saints brings us closer to Christ. When we ask the saints to pray for us, we ask them to join their wills with the will of God and intercede for us here on earth. This is the Communion of Saints which we profess every Sunday in the Creed.

Saint of the Month

A Message from Fr. Mark:

Our October SAINT OF THE MONTH is St. Francis of Assisi. There are several beautiful videos about St. Francis in Formed.org (FREE for our parishioners).

Hello, parents of our children’s catechism program (Family of Faith).
On the website Formed.org there are several films and documentaries about St. Francis of Assisi (our saint of the month for October), including a cartoon version for children! Watching this together can be part of your children’s catechism for this year! But before watching the cartoon on with your children, you may want to watch their documentary so that you can have an understanding and be able to explain it to your children.

My favorite full-length film about St. Francis is unfortunately not available to us for free on Formed.org. It is the 1989 film with Mickey Rourke as St. Francis. I prefer this film because it realistically shows the hardships of the life of poverty embraced by St. Francis (Zeffirelli’s 1972 film is too flowery and fanciful!)

Movie: Francesco

Francesco is a 1989 docu-drama relating in flashback St. Francis of Assisi's evolution from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and finally to a full-fledged saint. The film was based on Hermann Hesse's Francis of Assisi, which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. It was shot in the Italian region of Abruzzo and it stars Mickey Rourke and Helena Bonham Carter. Greek composer, Vangelis, provided the musical score.

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
