MEssage from our Ministers

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished plant. . . . - Isaiah 5:7

. . . take care of this vine and protect what your right hand has planted. . . . - Psalm 80:14-15

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petitions, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. - Philippians 4:6

There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. - Matthew 21:33

“The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel.” In his “song” of the vineyard Isaiah recalls the careful and loving treatment that the owner (God) gave to his vineyard (Israel). Yet the vineyard yielded only wild grapes (sin and rebellion). Out of frustration the owner threatens to destroy the vineyard (by means of the Assyrian army) and make it into a ruin (“God’s Vineyard,” Daniel J. Harrington, SJ).

In sincerity of heart can we ask God to “take care of this vine” (Psalm 80:14) so “we will no more withdraw from [God]” (Psalm 80:18)? What can we do today to be mindful of God’s love and care for us? What concrete steps will we take to turn away from sin and rebellion?

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Dear Parishioners,

Today is October 4, which is the Feast Day and the anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi in 1226. This year our entire parish can focus on learning about this important saint because in our new catechism books, which will be used for children of every age, St. Francis is the “saint of the month” for October. St. Francis is one of the most popular saints, of course, because he gave all his wealth to the poor and dedicated himself to a life of joyful service as a deacon in the church. He loved to preach and to distribute Jesus in Holy Communion at Mass, but he also loved to pray in solitude in the forest, where he even preached to the birds! He is known as a lover of God’s creation and of the poor. He is a model for all of us who are trying to resolve the issues of our society, such as caring for the environment but also caring for every human life. He even traveled to try and establish peace in the Middle East!

Here is a link to an article which I wrote which describes the life of this wonderful saint.

Everyone in the parish is invited to purchase copies of the new catechism books which we will be using to teach children of all ages. Each month there will be a “saint of the month” and lessons from the Catechism of the Catholic Church for each month. The book is called the “Family of Faith Parent’s Guide”, and it will be available for purchase in our parish office, after Sunday Masses and online. It will be very helpful for parents and grandparents and for catechists who teach children and adults.

Sincerely,

Fr. Mark

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

27th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“The stone the builders rejected has become the corner stone…” - Matthew 21:42

Jesus was rejected by the religious and political leaders of his day, as well as ordinary citizens.  Living a stewardship lifestyle may cause you to be “rejected” by others in today’s society.  For example, saying grace before a meal in a restaurant may attract some strange looks from some.  But to others it is sign that God is alive and well!

Sharing the Gospel
You are God's child. He made you and he loves you. Make sure you act like God's child. He created a beautiful world for you to live in. God expects you to take care of it. God also created people to live around you. Love them. Then you will make God happy.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to take care of your world and love the people around me.

Something to Draw
Draw a farmer giving a share of the grape harvest to some poor people.

Mission for the Week
Recycle paper, plastic and glass at home, instead of throwing it away. Recycling is a great way to take care of God's world.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos

Feast Day: October 5th

A year after emigrating from Bavaria to America in 1843 he was ordained a Redemptorist priest. He worked for six years with St. John Neumann. A kindly confessor and dynamic mission preacher, he ministered mainly in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Michigan, and directed two seminaries. During the Civil War, he petitioned President Lincoln to exempt seminarians from the draft and, when refused, he ordained them because priests were exempt. In 1866 he began working with immigrants in New Orleans and died in a yellow fever epidemic.

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
