MEssage from our Ministers

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate. – Exodus 22:26

I love you, O Lord, my strength, O Lord, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer. - Psalm 18:2-3

. . . and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. . . . - 1 Thessalonians 1:9

You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. . . . You shall love your neighbor as yourself. - Matthew 22:37, 39

Today’s readings speak of God as our rock and of the primacy of love. We cannot just say we love God and neighbor; our love needs to be expressed in compassion and kindness.

As Thomas Merton notes, “We are not converted only once in our lives but many times and this endless series of conversions and inner revolutions leads to our transformation.” Let us recognize God as “our rock, our fortress, our deliverer” (Psalm 18:3). Let us rely on the grace of God’s transforming love and then make real the words of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: “Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, [humanity] will have discovered fire.”

"Yo te amo, Yahveh, mi fortaleza," Salmos, 18 - Bíblia Católica Online "mi roca y mi baluarte, mi liberador,"

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS - COVID-19

Parish Pandemic Procedures Update

During this time of pandemic, the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is implementing all the safety procedures that are required, as well as many additional precautions that are recommended for the safety of our community members. These include cleaning, disinfecting, and the use of masks, thermometers, and proper social distancing.

We gather contact information of everyone who attends all Masses, just in case we have to call everyone who attended a particular Mass. This has happened two times in recent weeks. We had to notify everyone who attended two of our Masses here at Presentation, because we later learned that those two Masses had been attended by someone who later tested positive for coronavirus. In both cases, the person attending the Mass did not have any symptoms while attending the Mass, practiced social distancing while attending the Mass, and had conformed to the all established protocols of the parish. They assured us that they did not come in close contact with others at the Mass.

Nevertheless, a parish staff member notified each of those who had attended those Masses, just to inform them that they should be alert for symptoms. We also called them again two weeks later in an effort to make sure that our safety protocols at Mass were effective and that no one became infected by attending either of the Masses. One of these Masses was a Confirmation Mass celebrated on June 29 for our parish school families, and the other was our 5:00 p.m. Mass on July 5. We are providing this information so that everyone can make informed decisions about whether they wish to attend our Masses during the pandemic.

If anyone tests positive for coronavirus, please notify the parish right away (209-472-2150) so that we can notify those who were present at the Mass or service you attended. The information received will be handled in a confidential manner.

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Dear Parishioners,

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus shows that he is a teacher who knows how to simplify things. In this difficult time of quarantine, Jesus is a wonderful example for us of how to teach our children and all those who need instruction. Since we cannot gather the children in our small catechism rooms, we must now teach the parents how to teach their own children. The art of teaching is making things simple. In today’s Gospel, we see that Jesus is a GREAT teacher because he takes the whole Bible and simplifies it into two short sentences. A man came up to Jesus and asked him: “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? He said to him, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:36-40)

For the next four years, our parents and our catechists will try to teach everyone the entire four-part Catechism of the Catholic Church, using books called “A Family of Faith.” Please watch this short video which describes this simple new program:

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

30th Sunday of Ordinary Time
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.”  – Matthew 22:37

Do you put other “gods” before God?  Is your love of money, power, status, comfort or some personal possession greater than your love for God?  Do you really recognize that everything you have and that everything you are is a gift from God?  The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in all things in your life.

Sharing the Gospel
You scream, "I will not go to church. I want to stay home and play with my toys." Jesus says, "Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul and mind." You holler, "I hate Jimmy. He has a new bicycle and I do not even have a bike." Jesus reminds you: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." Your choices of words and actions show if you love God and your neighbor.

When you have a choice to make, think about what God wants. Make sure your choices are good and that they help other people. When you follow God's example, you will be ready to love other people. With God's help you can be gentle, forgiving and kind.

Prayer
God, help me show I love you and my neighbor.

Something to Draw
Draw you and Jesus riding down your street on a bicycle built for two.

Mission for the Week
I will show love for my neighbor by saying only kind things about people.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Saints Simon and Jude

Feast Day: October 28th

Listed among the Twelve Apostles in the New Testament, Simon is “the Canaanite” to Matthew and Mark and “the Zealot” to Luke; Jude is “Thaddeus” to Matthew and Mark, “Judas of James” to Luke, and “Judas, not Iscariot” to John. After Pentecost, they disappear. However, according to Eastern tradition, Simon died peacefully in Edessa, while Western tradition has him evangelizing in Egypt, then teaming up with Jude, who had been in Mesopotamia, on a mission to Persia, where they were martyred on the same day. Simon is the patron saint of tanners and lumberjacks; Jude is the patron of desperate causes, possibly because early Christians would pray to him, with a name evoking Judas Iscariot, only when all else failed.

Saint of the Month

A Message from Fr. Mark:

Our October SAINT OF THE MONTH is St. Francis of Assisi. There are several beautiful videos about St. Francis in Formed.org (FREE for our parishioners).

Hello, parents of our children’s catechism program (Family of Faith).
On the website Formed.org there are several films and documentaries about St. Francis of Assisi (our saint of the month for October), including a cartoon version for children! Watching this together can be part of your children’s catechism for this year! But before watching the cartoon on with your children, you may want to watch their documentary so that you can have an understanding and be able to explain it to your children.

My favorite full-length film about St. Francis is unfortunately not available to us for free on Formed.org. It is the 1989 film with Mickey Rourke as St. Francis. I prefer this film because it realistically shows the hardships of the life of poverty embraced by St. Francis (Zeffirelli’s 1972 film is too flowery and fanciful!)

Francesco is a 1989 docu-drama relating in flashback St. Francis of Assisi's evolution from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and finally to a full-fledged saint. The film was based on Hermann Hesse's Francis of Assisi, which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. It was shot in the Italian region of Abruzzo and it stars Mickey Rourke and Helena Bonham Carter. Greek composer, Vangelis, provided the musical score.

Prayer to Begin a School Year/Semester
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
