MEssage from our Ministers

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
I will gather them from the ends of the world. . . . I will console them and guide them. . . . - Jeremiah 31:8-9

The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. - Psalm 126:3

You are my son: this day I have begotten you. . . . - Hebrews 5:5

Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. - Mark 10:47

God is ever-present, within us, among us, for us. God gathers us, consoles us, guides us, does great things for us, has pity on us, and heals us.

Let us reflect on who God is and how God is for us. Then let us approach the throne of grace with great gratitude.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You.

Sincerely,
Fr. Mark

FR. MARK'S REFLECTIONS AND ARTICLES / REFLEXIONES Y ARTÍCULOS DEL P. MARK
Gospel Meditation

Dear Parishioners,

This year we have been hearing and studying the Gospel of St. Mark. In the Gospel of Mark, a major theme is “the way”. Jesus is depicted as constantly making his way to Jerusalem where he will purify the temple and establish a new temple sacrifice at the Last Supper and upon the cross. The word “way” is constantly repeated, and Jesus invites others to follow him along the “way of the Lord.”

This month in Rome, Pope Francis opened a worldwide “Synod on Synodality”. The word “synod” comes from a Greek word that means “journeying together” (literally “same path”). The pope wants to make sure that we are moving forward together to accomplish the mission of the church, which is to lead people to heaven. The church is a “pilgrim people” (Lumen Gentium 7) who strive together toward the goal of salvation.

In today’s Gospel passage, the word “way” is repeated several times. We hear about poor blind Bartimaeus who is seated along the wayside where Jesus was passing by. Presumably, this blind beggar had found his way to a busy intersection where he could beg for alms. His life was changed because his path met the path of Jesus. Bartimeaus was cured because he humbly admitted his need for Jesus, cried out to him, cast aside his cloak, and allowed himself to be led to Jesus (Mark 10:46-52). In ancient times, beggars would sometimes spread their cloak on the ground to collect coins tossed to them. By throwing away his cloak, he gave up all he had to follow Jesus. But his cure was only the beginning of a life of following the new “way” of Jesus (“The new way” was the first secret code word used to refer to the persecuted Church.) Jesus told Bartimaeus: “Go our way; your faith has saved you,” and then Bartimaeus “followed him on the way.”

Today is “World Mission Sunday”, which reminds us that we are on a pilgrimage with the people of every continent throughout the world. In 2009 there was a synod of African Bishops at which Pope Benedict XVI compared Bartimaeus to the people of God, the Church. The pope beautifully described the intersection of the paths of God and man. He said that the poor people in Africa: “are like the blind man of the Gospel, Bartimaeus, who ‘sat begging by the road.’ …The Lord meets Bartimaeus, who has lost his sight, on that road. Their two paths meet and they become one path. ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ the blind man confidently says. Jesus answers: ‘Call him!’ and adds: ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ God is light and the creator of light. Man is the son of the light, made to see the light, but he has lost his sight, and he finds himself forced to beg. The Lord, who has made himself a beggar for our sake, passes by him: hungry for our faith and our love. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ God knows but asks; He desires that it to be man who speaks. He wants man to stand up on his feet, to rediscover the courage to ask for what belongs to his dignity.” The Pope concluded his homily by crying out: “Courage! Get on your feet, continent of Africa!”

During this coming year which will be dedicated to synodality, let us have the humility and courage to get on our feet and follow Jesus!

Sincerely,

Fr. Mark

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO

Estimados feligreses,

Atentamente,

P. Marcos

Stewardship ReflEctions

From our Stewardship Council

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” - Mark 10:52

Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it physically. Many people think that miracles don’t happen anymore. This is hard, but try to focus on the positive and not the negative things in your life. When you focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common. You will see God’s active presence in your daily life. You will begin to develop an attitude of gratitude.

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus told the blind man, "Your eyes are healed because of your faith." Believe in the power of God. If you believe in him, God will help you. If you cannot see very well, he will send a doctor to give you glasses. If your mother's car breaks down, God will send a mechanic to fix it. If your father loses his job, God will find him a new one. God wants you to believe in him.

Prayer
Lord, help me see you in everyone around me.

Spiritual Communion
Even if one cannot sacramentally receive the Eucharist, everyone should be aware of the practice of making a spiritual communion. The following is a daily prayer for Spiritual Communion:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.

Bl. Chiara "Luce" Badano

October 29, 1971 - October 7, 1990
Feast Day: October 29

Chiara “Luce” Bandano was born in 1971, an only child to parents who had waited long for her arrival. As a child, she was bright, friendly, athletic, and had many friends. At age 9, she joined the Focolare movement and was very inspired by this spirituality. She was struck with cancer at age 17, but never lost her bright spirit. After a two-year battle with the disease, she entered eternal rest on October 7, 1990. Her last words were a message of hope: “Be happy, because I am!” She was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

“I think you all know that on Saturday September 25th, in Rome, an Italian girl named Chiara, Chiara Badano, was beatified. I invite you to get to know her: her life was short, but it’s a wonderful message. Chiara was born in 1971 and died in 1990, because of an incurable illness. Nineteen years full of life, of love, of faith. Two years, the last ones, also filled with pain and suffering, but always in love and light, a light that shone around her, and that came from within: from her heart filled with God! How can this be? How can a girl of 17, 18 years live a suffering like this, without any kind of human hope, spreading love, serenity, peace, faith? Obviously, this is a grace from God, but this grace was also prepared and accompanied by human collaboration: the collaboration of Chiara herself, certainly, but also of her parents and her friends.” — Pope Benedict XVI, Palmero, October 3, 2010

Beata Chiara "Luce" Badano

Prayer for our School
Blessed are you, Lord God,
Creator of body and mind and heart; you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge to guide your people in all their ways. At the beginning of this new school year (or semester/term) we implore your mercy: bless the students, teachers, and staff, that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love as we learn from you and each other how to follow your Son Jesus. Expand the horizons of our minds, that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge; deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your ways; and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need. Glory and praise to you, Lord God, in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.
R/. Amen

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form.... ”
(Lúcia dos Santos, Visionary of Fátima)

The terrifying and horrific vision of hell, which the Shepherd Children witnessed, “lasted but an instant.” Lúcia tells us: “We looked up at Our Lady, who said to us, so kindly and so sadly: ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.’”

Our Lady instructed the Little Shepherds: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: ‘O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.’”
